Some rhythms run deep, becoming the pulse of a community. At Maryville High School, the vocal music director, Vanessa Parsons, is the heartbeat behind every curtain call. Coming from a family of music educators, Vanessa, 51, has shaped the vocal arts in Maryville for 29 years. Her artistry stretches beyond musicality. She directs the school’s annual musical, leads the youth summer theatre camp and works to expand access to the arts for students of all backgrounds in her community.
Affectionately known to her students as “Mama P,” Vanessa is more than a music teacher in Maryville. She deliberately cultivates a sanctuary for her students. “My classroom is a place where they can lay on the floor for a little bit and detox, so that they can just be who they really are,” she says. The care is mutual. When Vanessa was diagnosed with cancer three years ago, she returned to work before she needed to and she credits the support of her students to her recovery. "They made me get better faster, and they keep me young, too," she says.
Maryville High School is the town's only high school, and Vanessa's classroom has welcomed generations of aspiring singers and dancers. For Vanessa, the unique magic of her classroom stems from the art itself. “Music is intimate," she says, "and I think what makes this environment different is because of the work that we do.”
Vanessa Parsons, 51, heads to Maryville Middle School on Sept. 25, 2026, to receive an award recognizing her contribution to the community. She co-founded Maryville Young Players, a summer musical theater program for students in second through ninth grade in the northwest Missouri region.
