"I like the camping trip because I can get away from home. This trip gave me the chance to experience new things, like how to identify poisonous stuff and to identify plants that make berries or not."
"I enjoy the nature and the view because I have not seen it for years and I am finally able to see the trees, woods, plants and wildlife."
"We can't use our phones because there is not wifi or signal and I am used to using my phone. It feels weird but its okay. I think it's more fun without our phones. I feel like it wouldn't really be ourdoors with our phones."
"I honestly thought the food that was cooked by kids/classmates was going to be really bad and I was not going to try it. Turns out it wasn't horrible, it was alright."
"This place is beautiful. There is green all around us and lots of tall trees."
"It was my first time by myself hiking. It was pretty, I liked it. I wish I could do it often. I was kind of scared at first becuase I have never been alone in the woods hiking. I want to try it again but this time with my friends. I might want to come again with my family."
"One group went to pull the ice plants because they are an invasive species and are causing a bad effect on our ecosystem. The other group (my group) was walking along the beach/seashore looking for trash and things that did not belong on the beach. We did this not only to help the environment but also to help ourselves and our sea-animals. Sea animals injest trash every single day and it's because of us."
"Today I learned that I can hike 5 miles but it hurt like hell."
"I thought the trip was going to be boring but turns out its not."
"I liked when we went to the beach and spread the flowers because it was sweet and it made me feel happy thtat we were able to do that."
"Thank you Ms. Mendez and other teachers for making this trip come true. We all thank you so much for everything you guys have done for us. If it wasn't for this trip I would never have been able to see a deer so close up."
"This trip has effected me mentally and physically because I started to socialize with lots of people I didn't talk to before. The hikes were exausting and the weather didn't help but it made me think a lot. Like how it's so tempting to use your phone and people react different ways without service. Pretty much being out here makes you think a lot."
"When I first got here I didn't know how I was going to feel about it because I didn't want to be away from home and I was scared that I might see wild animals. But now that I'm here I'm glad that I came."
"I'm really glad my parents let me come because I'm really liking hiking with all my friends even though we get really tired and struggle a lot when we are going up hill."
"I really appreciate you guys working to raise up money and bringing us here. I've liked it a lot. The people I met here were very nice and helpful."
"I enjoy helping in the kitchen and being a part of this nice, awesome and fun experience. I would like to come and visit again."
Dear Students,
This trip with all of you was one of my most memorable experiences as a teacher so far and I want to thank you all for participating and sharing in this with me. Your commitment to making this trip happen from day one has blown me away. The maturity you displayed as you shared in the responsibilities that came with being on this trip has made me incredibly proud.
Not only did I have the privilege to get to know you outside of the classroom and learn with you at Point Reyes, I was also able to share a bit of myself with all of you and for this I am grateful. I introduced you, once again, to my mom, who loved you all and appreciated your constant enthusiasm in helping her in the kitchen. I was able to celebrate my birthday with you. I was able to be silly and goofy with you outside of school. And, perhaps most memorable for me, you helped me find the courage and strength to say goodbye to my friend Keaton, who passed away last week in the ocean by helping me to toss flowers into the ocean for him. I will be forever grateful for your love, kindness and sense of humor and look forward to the rest of our school year together.
Please help me work to improve our trip for next years 7th graders by completing the following survey as honestly as you can.
Love,
Ms. Mendez-Cruz
