Collaborative Responsibilities

Before departing for Clem Miller Environmental Education Center, students work together with their teachers and classmates to plan and prepare for the trip. Students are expected to participate in the following pre-departure action items:

• Establish and agree to honor grade wide expectations leading up to the trip and while on the trip.
• Fund-raise
• Create a menu
• Run a Food-Drive
• Review cleaning responsibilities and sign up for specific jobs.
• Create a kitchen schedule by cabin that is equitable.
• Create a shower schedule by cabin that is equitable.
• Complete pre-departure readings on the history of Point Reyes.
• Journal about hopes and goals for the trip
• Reach out to parents and invite them to chaperone
• Pack

MPA students work together with a chaperoning staff to prepare each meal while at the Center. Students are involved in the planning of the menu and the food-drive to collect necessary ingredients. Students then learn to work together in small teams in an industrial kitchen and cook meals for their classmates and teachers. After each meal students work in small teams to clean up the dining area and kitchen. Additionally, students learn to sort food waste properly.

MPA staff and students are responsible for the facilities at Clem Miller Environmental Education Center while on the trip. Therefore, it is the responsibility of all participants to care for the facilities and clean up before departure. There are specific cleaning instructions for each part of the property including:

• Cabins
• Kitchen
• Main Lodge
• Outside Main Lodge
• Annex
• Bathrooms

Staff and students work in separate teams to complete the clean up process together.
