Sierra Gutierrez (she/her)
Artist statement:
I make art that sets my soul on fire and expresses thoughts that are otherwise inaccessible. I draw from lived exeriences as well as subconscious exploration by using automatic techniques. Excapism and self exploration through intensive process is what drives me to create. I feel inspired by the materials and the process, and do not limit myself to any single medium.
Art is a powerful tool in bringing people together and educating the greater populace. Sometimes my art is quite personal, and that is what touches people's hearts and can feel the most poignant, sometimes my art is quite social, requiring hands on participation from my community in order for anything to happen, and that is a thread that pulls people into a special shared experience.
My art takes time and meticulously placed energy to carry out effectively, but when it is, I hope that it can speak to the hearts of those around it. It can bring people together under a colorful canopy to laugh and dance, or it can ask people to withdraw and reflect.
