Cat Hulshoff (she/they)
I have always enjoyed painting on large formatted canvases with oils. The quality of the medium is flexible and forgiving, allowing me to play with light, weight and weightlessness, colors, and most importantly textures. While there are obvious metaphors to unpack in my paintings - because why not, its fun - these paintings are really about satisfying a tactile urge to smoosh colors around, and because I am way too twitchy, I use large canvases to give me room to move. Painting is a practice of selfcare. In a world where taking up space as a queer female is endlessly harder than it needs to be, a big-ass canvas sems the perfect place to take up space.
