During your time as a Library Science Student (LSS), you will gain knowledge about a school library functions as well as provide a valuable service to our school community. You will also learn and practice skills that will help you for future employment.
As LSS for the Mission Oak Library, your main goal is to help others. You will be providing assistance to library patrons (students) as well as teachers and library staff with many different duties and tasks .
You are expected to be responsible, dependable, organized, attentive to detail, and able to work independently.
What you will do as a Library Science Student (LSS):
Locate any book in the library using your knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
Understand how books are located in the library using Destiny.
Shelve books correctly and neatly.
Share understanding of library policy and procedures.
Demonstrate effective communication skills required interact with library patrons.
Finish assigned tasks on time and accurately.
Demonstrate appropriate behavior for a work setting.
Complete Class assignments/projects in a timely manner and by assigned due date.
Other Duties:
Responsible for maintaining assigned sections of library shelves.
Working the circulation desk.
Helping to direct patrons within the library.
Maintaining the library space.
Delivering slips to classrooms, office, attendance.
Helping other office aides when needed.
Assisting with library events and campaigns.
Assisting with Mrs. Cabrera or Mr. Nunez when needed.
You will learn how to accomplish your work in the library under the direct guidance of Mrs. K. Jones, Mrs. Cabrera, and Mr. Nunez. It is your responsibility to listen to all instructions and to ask questions when you don't understand. Please notify adult library staff if you see someone or something in the library that needs attention.
There may be times when you have completed all tasks prior to the end of the class period. You may read or work on assignments from other classes. Video games, being on your phone (texting), internet browsing, or sleeping are not permitted.
Your grade will be determined by the following:
Attendance
Ability to work independently
Working well with others
Following instructions
Shelving your section of library books accurately
Keeping your assigned section of the library clean and neat
Completion of daily and periodical tasks
Class Assignments/Projects
Your perks for being a LSS include, but are not limited to:
Extra book check out (up to 4).
First dibs on new titles in the library.
Learn skills that will prepare you for future jobs.
Possibility of earning letters of recommendations for colleges, work, scholarships, etc.
You are expected to follow all rules within the TJUHSD and Mission Oak High School student handbook
In addition to:
Cell phones should be turned off and not visible, and NEVER at the circulation desk.
Maintain a quiet library setting. Talk quietly.
Use your time effectively. You may not use class time for personal use (social talk, playing games, surfing the internet, or sleeping.
Eating and drinking (except for bottled water) are not permitted in the library.
Don't give information about students to anyone.
Don't divulge what books/resources someone has used or the type of information they were researching to anyone.
Don't divulge fines status or lost/damaged books to other student patrons.
Don't reveal names of students who have checked out a particular book or for whom a book is being held for.
