Mini Movie Fest (Last Samurai)
I explained the movie from two different stops. One from the protagonist's standpoint is Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) and the other from Emperor and Katsumoto's (Watanbe's) point.
What Katsumoto tells the movie is that values, traditions and customs should not be compromised at the expense of development and / or age. He does not fully oppose the idea of a new military but does not support the fact that the idea of capitalism will help the root cause of Samurai's life. Let me explain how. And this is how I will come to Algren's point of view.
Katsumoto realizes that theirs is the realization of real culture and practices that take place within the corridors of his King's empire at the hands of Western Westerners who have influenced some of his men. Emperor, young and old loves these ideas and thinks it will be a good step for his country. But he does not know how much damage his Kingdom can do.
Now, Algren, a soldier of the capitalist nation, who has taken the world, men and women away from the world, has seen down the philosophies and joined Katsumoto after finding purpose in his life. Aim to find peace, but by fighting a war.
In this way both Katsumoto and Algren try to convey the message that no matter how hard you try, it will hurt your people, their beliefs, and your culture.
Algren, on the other hand, suffers from the effects of war after trauma and tries to find peace. He is considering suicide and his last way of doing this is to enter the battlefield and commit suicide. But life has other plans for him. You learn about the Samurai, their ways, and their ways. the discipline with which they look at their life and how they find purpose and happiness in the little things around them.
Algren is an example of a hopeless and senseless man who finds purpose after seeing another side of life and finds the purpose of repeating it after seeing a woman who forgives him for killing her husband. This is the greatest lesson in Algren's life that we should forgive and strive for a better life.
So, yes, this is what I learned in the movie.
SELF REFLECTION EXERCISE
Write you own definition of leadership using the traits discussed in the previous session. Write this definition thinking that you are a teacher and you want to make it very clear what is leadership to your students. Your peers will read this definition and have the opportunity to rate it.
Talk to students about why you expect certain behaviour (but not at that moment when the behaviour is not under control) or how you organize your class as its leader. Explain how leadership works in your mind and how you would like to share it because good leaders do
