ラニヨンさんから：答え甲斐のある質問をありがとうございました！質問に答えることは、自分の作品についてなにかしら教わることなんだなとしみじみ思います。
1)多くの作品を頻繁に出版なさるラニヨンさんの才能には驚くばかりです。創作のネタを、おもいつく特別な場所や時間帯はありますか？
私はたいてい早朝に起きて、その間に、コーヒーと、メールチェック、ソーシャルメディアに顔だしをすませてしまいます。
一日の残りは書くことに集中したいので、書くこと以外の仕事は、はやめに終わらせるようにしています。
今の私は、昔のように多作ではないのですが、２ヶ月かそのくらいの期間に、なにか新しいものを得るようにしています。
メールなどはオフィスでしていますが、書くのは寝室です。暖炉の前に、大きな、座り心地のいい椅子をおいてあるんですが、そこが私が創作ベストスポットです。
理想は、週の平日を9時〜5時で働くことですが、一度もできたためしがありません。ほとんど毎日働いています。今は、夫と夕食をとる時間を持ちたいので、５時には途中でもきりあげることにしています。
2)キャラクターに名前をつけるための、独自の方法はありますか？例えば、エイドリアン・イングリッシュは、別の名前だった可能性はあるのでしょうか。
メインキャラクターの名前については、相当いろいろ考えます。名前にしっくりこないと、その人物を書くのに問題が残るので。正しい名前をつけるまで、キャラクターは命を持ったことになりませんし。赤ちゃん用の命名本を、これだと思うまで、ひたすらページをめくったりします。
脇キャラになると、かなりいきあたりばったりですね。目の前にある本から名前をもらってきたり、TVで見た名前だったり、テーブル上にある物の名前や過去の誰かだったり…両親の会話にでてきた名前を使うこともよくあります。
3)日本では、出版社と小説家が協力して本をつくる習慣があります。アメリカでは、出版社から、小説の内容についてアドバイスされることはありますか？
例えば、流行しているジャンルで書くように、または、このシリーズの続編を書いてくださいと、薦められることはありますか？
最近は自己出版ばかりですが、出版社と一緒に仕事をしていたころは、ときどき提案されることはありました。M/Mフィクションを始めたばかりのころ、よく言われたことは、セックスシーンをもっと増やすように、でしたね。:-D しまいには、むこうのほうが折れて、私が思う分量のセックスシーンがキャラクターに合っていて、さらに増やす必要はないということをわかってもらえるようになりました。
とはいえ、出版社と一緒に仕事をする大きな利点は、編集者の目やアドバイスだと思います。いい編集者はいい本を作りますから。
1)ラニヨンさんのブログにある、作品にまつわる絵や音楽リストが楽しいです。作品のインスピレーションになった画家やイラストレーターがいたら教えて下さい。
うちには、写真集とアートブックがどさっとおいてあるんですが、それを頭が疲れたなと思う夜に見るのが好きなんです。単純に、なにかきれいなもの、インスピレーションほしいなと思ったときにも見ます。
私が好きなのは、往年の写真家スリム・アーロンズや、ウォレス・ナッティングです。絵では、ジェシカ・ブリリが好きです。ほかには、ジョン・アトキンソン・グリムショーの絵、グランヴィル・レドモンドの風景画、フレデリック・マイゼン、マルグリート・ストゥーバー・ピアソンも好きです。最近では、デビー・クリスウェルのフォークアートにも惹かれていま。ちょっとかわったものが好きなんだと思います。少しですが絵や写真も実際に持っています。

2)ラニヨンさん作品のファンフィクションも楽しんでいます。ご自身は、自分のファンフィクションについて、どう思っていますか？
存在は知っていますが、ちゃんと読んだことはありません。ファンフィクションに対して否定する気持ちもないです。思うに、ファンフィクションというのは、オリジナルのストーリーを書きたいと思うほどのキャラクター愛が生んだ、作家を喜ばせてくれる作品なんだと思います。自分の作品が誰かの創作意欲を刺激していると考えるのは楽しいですね。

3)古いモノクロ映画がお好きだとききました。もしAdrien English seriesか、Fair Game seriesが映画化されるとしたら、撮ってもらいたい監督や、演じてほしい俳優はいますか？
これは難しい質問ですね！私が「天使の影」を書いていたとき、頭に思い浮かべていたのは、最盛期のスティーブ・マックイーンですが、今は私の知らない新しい人がたくさんいると思うので…！
自分の作品については、読者よりだいぶ違う目でキャラクターを見ていると思います。いわば、あなたの人生が映画になったとして、家族を誰が演じるかという質問ですね。誰が家族を演じるか想像するって難しいですね…！でも、私はいつも、読者が教えてくれる、完璧なエイドリアンや、これこそエリオットという俳優名や写真に、目を輝かしています。

4)私が一番驚いたのは、ラニヨンさんのプロフィールがMr.LanyonからMs.Lanyonにかわったことです。写真をみてJames Tiptree Jr.のようだと思いました。笑顔も仕草もとても素敵です！プロフィールを変えたことは、時代の変化が原因ですか、それとも、ご自身の心境の変化が原因ですか？
身に沁みる言葉をありがとう。その両方です。
出版するにあたって、男性のペンネームを使う必要性があり、それにいわば巻き込まれたかたちになりました。時間がたつにつれて、人を騙しているのではという暗い気持ちになり…、もともとジョシュ・ラニヨンとしてやっていくことは、私が考えていたことではななかったからです。
でも、政治社会の環境が変わると、男性のペンネームに隠れていることは、私になにか目論みや意図があって使っていると受け取られるのではと思い始めました。そして、このような作品は男性にしか書けない、ゲイの経験を理解できる女性はいないなどといわれることに、（そこに貶める意図がないのはわかるのですが）、いてもたってもいられなくなり、怒りすら覚えるようになりました。
そこで、公にすることでどんなにいやな思いをしたとしても、この状態が続くよりははるかにましだと、結論を出したのです。

5)フェアゲームのElliotは、小説の中では、メガネをかけている描写がないように思います。しかし、日本版の表紙ではメガネをかけています。日本版の表紙で、エリオットがメガネをかけていることについて、どう思われますか？（メールには、表紙画像を添付しました）
これは面白いと思います。この彼はメガネをかけると、グっときますね！でも、たしかにご指摘のとおり、エリオットはメガネをかけていません。
6)Jakeはゲイであることを理由に警察を辞めてしまいました。もし、お話の時代設定が、現代でもジェイクは警察を辞めると思いますか？
そうですね、ジェイクが警察を辞めた本当の理由は、自分自身が持っていた志を裏切り、妥協してーー真実であるなにかをつかんだからです。
もし今、エイドリアン・イングリッシュシリーズを書くとしたら、ずいぶん違う話になるでしょうね。それこそたくさんの理由で。最大の理由は、ジェイクのような荒削りで孤立した性格だったら、今の時代、クローゼットであることは、信じられないほど厳しいと思うからです。
7)Adrien のセリフ「神がインスタント食品を発明したんだ。その恩恵にあずかってなにがわるい」が好きです。ラニヨンさんも、Adrienのような食生活ですか。それとも、食事には気を使う方ですか？
２０年前の私の食生活はエイドリアンよりひどかったですね！結婚する前は、ダイエットジンジャエールとローストナッツを夕飯がわりにしていました。私とエイドリアンに共通するのはTab好きなところでしょう。今は、だいぶ健康に気を使うようになりました。夫が料理上手で、夕食の時間というものが、以前とは違う特別なものになったということも関係しています。 ;-)
8)私は、エイドリアンの、皮肉なコメントが好きなんですが、彼のこの性格は、イギリス出身の母親譲りですか？それとも、心臓の病気が原因で、まっすぐ生きるはずの10代を失ってしまったのでしょうか。
エイドリアンは、ユーモアに自分の本当の考えを隠すことに慣れてしまった人だと思います。この特徴は、父親のほうから受け継いだものでしょう。エイドリアンはとてもユーモアに長けているので、世界をなにか皮肉めいた視点で見ることができるのだと思います。

Thank you so much for these interesting questions! I think answering them will actually teach me something about my own work. :-)
Question:
1. We are amazed by your ability to publish so many novels so frequently. Are there particular places or times where you find your inspiration for your work?
I usually rise early in the morning, which gives me a chance to have coffee, check my email, and appear briefly on social media.
I try to get the "business" stuff out of the way early so that I can devote the rest of the day to writing.
I'm not as prolific as I formerly was, but I do try to get something new out every two or so months.
I do email and that kind of thing in my office. I write in my bedroom. I have a large comfortable chair in front of the fireplace, and that's where I like best to create fiction.
My goal is to work a nine-to-five weekday work week, but I've never really managed to achieve that. I work nearly every day. I do try to knock off at five now so that I can have dinner with my husband and spend a little time with him.
2. Do you have a particular process in how you decide your character names? For example, is there a possibility that Adrien English could have had another name?
I put a lot of thought into the main characters' names. If the names don't quite "fit," I have trouble writing the character. They don't quite come to life until I have the right name. I have a book of baby names that I flip through until I find something that feels right to me.
But when it comes to side characters, it's much more fluid. I'll grab a name from a stack of books next to me or from someone on TV or an object sitting on a table or someone from the past--often the name of someone my parents used to talk about.
3.In Japan, publishers and novelists often work together to produce books. But, in America, have you ever been advised by the publishers about the content of your novels? For example, do they recommend you to write for this particular genre or write a sequel for a series?
Mostly now days I self-publish, but when I did work more with publishers they would sometimes have suggestions. When I started out in M/M fiction, the suggestion was usually for more or longer sex scenes. :-D Eventually, they came to accept that my books would have however much sex I felt was right for the characters--and no more.
That said, one of the great advantages of working with a publishing house is having the advice and insight of editors. Good editors make good books.
Four questions about your work:
1. I enjoy seeing the images and music lists on your blog that deepen my understanding of your work. Do any illustrators or painters inspire your work? I would love to hear who they are if you do have any.
I have stacks of art and photography books, which I like to flip through at night when my brain is tired or when I just want to see something beautiful and inspirational.
I love vintage photos by Slim Aarons and Wallace Nutting. I love Jessica Brilli prints. I love John Atkinson Grimshaw's work, Granville Redmond, Frederic Mizen and Marguerite Stuber Pearson. Lately I'm enchanted by the folk art of Debbie Criswell. I like a lot of odd ball things. And I do own a few prints and photographs.
2.I also enjoy reading fanfiction about your work. What do you think about fan fiction based on your novels?
I know it's out there, but I haven't read much of it. I don't have any objection to fan fiction. In fact, I think it's flattering that writers love the characters so much they want to write their own stories with them. I like thinking that my work inspires creativity in others.
3.I have heard that you like classic film noir. If the Adrien English Series or Fair Game series were made into a movie, which director or actor would you like to appear in the film adaptation?
This is such a difficult question for me! When I originally wrote Fatal Shadows I envisioned Jake as a young, edgy Steve McQueen, but I think a lot of new readers wouldn't even know the reference!
Also, when it comes to my own work, I see the characters so differently than readers do. It's like asking who should play a family member in a movie of your life. It's hard for me to picture anyone playing them! But I'm always fascinated when readers send my photos or suggestions of who they think would be a perfect Adrien or a great Elliot.
4. The change in your profile from Mr. Lanyon to Ms. Lanyon surprised me the most. When I looked at the photo, I thought it looked like James Tiptree Jr. The smile and mannerisms in the picture are very nice! Did you change your profile because of changes in the times, or because of changes in your feelings?
Thank you for the kind words. Really both. To get published it was necessary to use a male pen name, and then I sort of got trapped. As time went by I became more and more unhappy with the deception--it had never been my original intent to interact with people as Josh Lanyon. But also the socio-political environment changed so that I began to understand that continuing to hide behind a male pseudonymn could be interpreted as something I envisioned or intended. And finally, I became impatient and even resentful of being told (though no disrespect was intended) that only a man could write as I did, no woman could understand the gay male experience, etc. I came to the conclusion that however unpleasant my coming out might be, it would be still more unpleasant to continue as I was.
A Question about the “Fair Game” series.
1. Elliot from Fair Game isn’t described as wearing glasses in the novel. However, the cover of the Japanese translation has him wearing glasses. What do you think about Elliott wearing glasses on the Japanese cover?
I found that amusing--happily, he looks very attractive in those glasses!. But you're right, Elliot does not wear glasses.
Questions about the “Adrien English” series
1. The reason why Jake quit the police force was that he is gay. Do you think that Jake would have still left the police force if the story was set in the present age?
Well, the real reason Jake has to leave the police force is that he believes he has compromised himself--which is somewhat true. If I were to write the Adrien English series now, it would have to be a very different series--for a number of reasons. The primary one being that I don't think a personality as fierce and independent as Jake would believably be so severely closeted in this day and age.
2. I like Adrien's line, "If God had intended me to cook, he wouldn't have Trader Joe's." Do you also eat like Adrien? Or do you cook and pay more attention to cooking and eating?
Twenty years ago my eating habits were even worse than Adrien's! Before I married I used to have diet gingerale and dry roasted peanuts for dinner more often than not. One thing we did share was a love of Tab soda. Now days I'm much more health conscious. Also my husband is a very good cook, so dinnertime has come to mean something special. ;-)
3. I absolutely love Adrien's sarcastic comments. Did he inherit this kind of personality from his British mother? Or maybe because of serious heart disease that discouraged him from being straightforward in his teens?
I think Adrien is someone who got in the habit of falling back on humor to hide his real feelings. That probably was more of a trait he inherited from his father. Adrien does have a strong sense of humor and is able to view the world with a kind of wry tolerance.
