Standard 9- The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.
I believe that this artifact meets Knowledge Indicator 9B which states, "knows laws and rules (e.g., mandatory reporting, sexual misconduct, corporal punishment) as a foundation for the fair and just treatment of all students and their families in the classroom and school."
Before I was able to go into the classroom, I had to go through Mandated Reporter training. It is extremely important that as teachers, we are advocates for all of our students. Teachers are Mandated Reporters, and it is important that we are looking out for our students and anything that may be happening to them outside of school. I learned that it is extremely important to be there for my students, I may be the only one who can do so.
This artifact meets Performance Standard 9K which states, "reflects on professional practice and resulting outcomes; engages in self-assessment; and adjusts practices to improve student performance, school goals, and professional growth."
Throughout my student teaching, I was able to write weekly posts where I reflected on the week. I wrote about what happened, what I learned, the goals I had for the week, and if I met the goals I had from the previous week. It was extremely helpful to reflect on my teaching and situations that I had experienced throughout my time. I also received great advice from my supervisors as well, and it helped me to become a better teacher. It gave me an idea of what I needed practice with, and what I had been doing well. I will continue to reflect this way as a teacher. I learned a lot about how to reflect and think about my teaching.
