Standard 7- The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student 6 growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
I believe this artifact meets Knowledge Indicator 7E which states, "understands how to select, construct, and use assessment strategies and instruments for diagnosis and evaluation of learning and instruction."
During my student teaching, I had the opportunity to create and choose assessments that show how well students understand concepts and content. I was able to use this assessment after teaching about housing and nutrition. This assessment was appropriate for students, and it was directly related to what we had been learning the whole week. They averaged 95% on this test, so they did an awesome job and really understood this topic. I learned that appropriate summative assessments are a great way to see what students understand.
In my co-taught biology class, I was able to support students with disabilities. I believe that this meets Performance Indicator 7R which states, "uses assessment strategies and devices that are nondiscriminatory, and take into consideration the impact of disabilities, methods of communication, cultural background, and primary language on measuring knowledge and performance of students."
In this co-taught class, the tests and quizzes were pretty difficult, and I knew my students well, so I was able to change the wording in questions, read the assessment, and get rid of questions if needed. This made the assessment more equitable for my students, and I was able to meet them where they were at to help them succeed. I learned that I can work with students to accommodate them and modify their tests if needed, whatever makes the test equitable.
