Standard 5- The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
During my high school student teaching experience, I got the opportunity to teach vocational skills. This implemented both vocational skills and standards into their learning. I believe that this meets Knowledge Indicator 5D which states, "understands disciplinary and interdisciplinary instructional approaches and how they relate to life and career experiences."
Teaching the students about job opportunities and job skills was very fulfilling. I taught a lesson on job shadowing and the different opportunities that can help them with their future life and career experiences. They got to explore some opportunities that would be interesting to them, and they got to see different job opportunities that are out in the world. The artifacts are the lesson plan (top left) and the presentation (bottom left). I learned the different career opportunities for my future students and how it is related to their interests.
I was able to create a lesson plan for my math methods class about technology. I believe that this lesson aligns with Performance Indicator 5L which states, "develops a variety of clear, accurate presentations and representations of concepts, using alternative explanations to assist students’ understanding and presenting diverse perspectives to encourage critical and creative thinking."
I was able to create a lesson that showed fractions in multiple ways so students can understand them. It showed them in number fractions, with pizza, visually with circles, and in other ways. I learned that being able to help student's understanding of fractions is extremely important, and showing them multiple ways is going to help them succeed. I did not teach this exact lesson in my student teaching, but it was similar, and the students did awesome because of the different representations of a tough concept.
