Homework
The purpose of homework is two fold: to practice new knowledge or new skills and enrich students’ understanding of a topic and apply it in new ways. Homework is directly connected to what students are learning in class and builds on skills or knowledge that a student already has. There is no such thing as no homework. Expect to spend anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes (Junior High) or 20 to 30+ minutes (High School) on math and/or science homework every night Monday to Thursday.
Homework will...
- be connected to what students are learning in class.
- be within a student's ability to complete on their own.
- be mindful of students' access to help and other resources at home.
- homework is another way for teachers to see if students have understood a new idea or skill.
Homework will include but is not limited to:
- practice basic literacy and math skills
- practicing learned skills (often completing work that has not been completed in class)
- reading to prepare for upcoming activities or classroom discussions
- practicing a presentation
- applying a variety of skills to a longer-term project
- researching a topic being studied in class
- write personal reflections in a journal
- preparing for a test or exam
What can you do as a family:
- provide encouragement
- help your child develop study skills at home (getting organized, breaking tasks into smaller parts)
- set up a space for homework
