It was a bright, sunny summer morning on June 17, 2008 when my life unexpectedly changed forever. I was six years old. My father had been in a horrible biking accident. I was very young, and I do not remember much from those six days. However, I will forever be grateful for the stories and memories that I have since heard about my father and the amount of selflessness he had stored in his loving heart.

June 23, 2008 was an extremely hard day for my family and me. My father had passed away after undergoing brain surgery and many more procedures that would have potentially changed his life either way. I remember struggling to think of a positive and/or happy ending for the situation until organ donation was brought to our attention. My father was also a huge advocate for organ donation, for he biked and ran every year in the Donate Life America marathon to raise awareness for organ donation.

3 lives and 4 organs. My father saved three lives donating just four of his organs through organ donation. Those numbers are not even including his tissues, etc. Although my family had just realized that we would have to live our lives without my father, we also realized that he was a hero to not only us but those three people and all of their family and friends. It was hard and complicated growing up without a father figure to teach me how to drive or show me how to fish, but I am at peace knowing that our loss helped so many people gain.
