"Your desire will be to control your husband"
Misogyny (hatred of women) is a shameful plague in human history. It causes miseries and moral outrages, like societies' systematic neglect of women's rights not to be physically and sexually assaulted.[1] Misogyny oppresses women, girls and all Humanity.
"...And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you.” Genesis 3:16 (NLT)
"...You will want to control your husband, but he will dominate you.” Genesis 3:16 (NET)
"...Your desire will be to control your husband, but he will rule over you." Genesis 3:16 (Divine Design: God's Complementary Roles for Men and Women, p. 27)
"...Your desire shall be contrary to* your husband, but he shall rule over you.” Genesis 3:16 (ESV) *Or "shall be toward"; see Genesis 4:7
"...You will greatly desire [C the word implies a desire to control; 4:7] your husband, but he will rule over you.” Genesis 3:16 (EXB)
Why has misogyny been promoted by people who claim to be followers of Christ?
Jesus never showed or condoned mistrust of women. Instead, Christ consistently promoted them.
Even in this millennium, we find a prominent so-called Christian organisation like John MacArthur / Grace To You pushing the idea that women are cursed by God to act like the Devil.
And claiming the authority of shamelessly abused mistranslations of Scripture to push this evil.
"Sin has turned the harmonious system of God-ordained roles into distasteful struggles of self-will. Lifelong companions, husbands and wives, will need God's help in getting along as a result. The woman's desire will be to lord it over her husband, but the husband will rule by divine design (Eph. 5:22-25). This interpretation of the curse is based upon the identical Hebrew words and grammar being used in 4:7 (see note there) to show the conflict man will have with sin as it seeks to rule him." (The MacArthur Bible Commentary, p. 18)
"I would not attend a church or approve of a church with a woman pastoring or on the elder board. It isn’t sexist. Sin brought a curse that causes women to sin fully desire to usurp authority." (Dean Monty, @LandJax on Twitter)
"God told Cain that if he chose not to obey His commands, ever-present sin, crouched and waiting to pounce like a lion, would fulfill its desire to overpower him (cf. 3:16)." (The MacArthur Bible Commentary, p. 19)
Should anyone believe the ESV, EXB, NLT, NET or John MacArthur's translation of Genesis 3:16?
Most Bible versions do not follow such a dubious and dangerous translation.
Consider for example these 7 leading translations .
"...and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee." (AKJV)
"....Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.” (NKJV)
"...yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” (NRSV)
"Yet your urge shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." (NABRE)
"...You’ll want to please your husband, but he’ll lord it over you.” (MSG)
"...Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.” (NASB)
"...yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” (RSV)
How does the Ancient Greek translation, the Septuagint (LXX), look?
kai pros ton andra sou
"And toward the husband of yours [will be]
hē apostrophē sou,
the recourse of yours,
kai autos sou khūrieūsei
and he will dominate you."
And how does the ancient Latin translation, the Vulgata, look?
et ad virum tuum erit
"And toward your husband will be
appetitus tuus,
your desire;
ipse autem dominabitur tui
he, however, will dominate you."
