COVID-19 Information

In regards to the in-person and hands-on training that we will host, we will be using our proven techniques to maintain safety of all persons regarding COVID-19. Such practices include:

The EMT Program at San Diego Miramar College requires ALL students to receive the COVID-19 vaccine AND one (1) booster dose if you are eligible for one, per CDC guidelines. The EMT Program is NOT accepting ANY exemption forms. No exceptions.

  • Requiring any staff, students or other persons to don facial coverings anytime they are on campus, as per CDC guidelines.

  • Enforce social distancing among students and staff anytime on campus.

  • Performing daily health screenings on students and staff that enter the EMT area.

  • Requiring students and staff to stay home if they are ill in any way, and to have them contact their Healthcare Provider for testing immediately as per CDC guidelines as well as their respective instructor.

We also have several other safety precautions in-place that allows our program to remain safe AND productive to maintain the integrity of the EMT Program. If you plan on taking the EMT Course at Miramar College, please review the following handouts below.

We are fortunate that ALL of our EMT Faculty and staff are actual healthcare providers themselves and have many years of training, education and experience at handling these situations. This only increases the confidence we have to assure safety of students. The EMT faculty and staff want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we all go through this pandemic together.

GENERAL QUESTIONS...

1. LIVE SCAN FINGERPRINTING

"I've already completed LiveScan fingerprinting for 1 entity (DMV or San Diego County or Somewhere else..), do I have to do it again?"

      • YES. Multiple agencies require LiveScan fingerprinting and due to privacy laws and guidelines, agencies are not allowed to share this information with anyone. This is why each agency will have a separate request form. Which in turn, is a separate fee.

2. TOTAL COSTS

"Will it always be this expensive every time I re-certify?"

      • NO. The initial fees and costs involved with initial certification are indeed great. However, once you are working, most employers may reimburse you the re-certification costs and typically costs are much cheaper. AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT LAPSE/EXPIRE.

3. TEXTBOOK

"Can I use an old edition of the textbook?"

      • NO. The newest edition of the required textbook is necessary as their is updated information that the tests will reflect.

"Can I use an eBook?"

      • UP TO YOU. The eBook to the text is optional. Some students like to use it with the use of a tablet, laptop or other mobile device.

"Is the MyBrady online resource required?"

      • UP TO YOU. It is strongly suggested you obtain this, but it is not required. This online resource has flashcards, multiple practice quizzes, videos, PowerPoint presentations and it guides you through the textbook.

4. IMMUNIZATIONS

"What if I just had a TB test a few months ago, do I need another TB test done?"

      • YES. Students are required to have a recent TB test completed with negative results OR a negative chest X-Ray (Documents to be reviewed by Student Health Services.) within 4 weeks of the class starting. No Exceptions.

"If I am taking the Summer session EMT Class, do I need a flu shot?"

      • NO. This is only required of the fall and spring sessions.

5. UNIFORMS

"Do the steel toe boots have to come from the bookstore?"

      • NO. As long as the boots are a solid black, steel toe, station boot, they can come from anywhere. Students have reported they have found them at WalMart for a lower price. They can be either laced, zipper or slip-on, as station boots come in those styles.

"Because it's cold outside, can I wear my own sweater/sweatshirt?"

      • NO. Sweatshirts/sweaters and baseball hats MUST come from the bookstore only as it has the Miramar EMT/FIRE logo on it. No exceptions! The same applies to baseball hats, they must come from the bookstore, as it also has the Miramar logo.
