AFFINITY SPACES

Milton Public School's Educators and Staff of Color Affinity Group (MESCA) is a collective that provides a safe space to address issues of identity and equity within the Milton Public School community. The group is open to any Milton Public Schools faculty who identifies as a person of coloran umbrella term that includes those who identify as Latinx/Hispanic-American, African-American/Black, Middle Eastern, Asian/Asian-American, Native American, or multiracial.

Why we invest in educator diversity

Everyone benefits from having a racially diverse educator workforce. Increased teacher diversity will lead to more culturally relevant teaching techniques and curricula, higher expectations of children of color, and the reduction of the racial achievement gap. It will also encourage students of color to enter the teaching profession. Unfortunately, these aspirations will only be realized by combatting the challenges of recruiting and retaining a diverse educator workforce.

Today, over half of the nation's public school students are children of color. But educators of color represent about 20% of the educator workforce—grossly underrepresented in teaching and administrative roles. In Milton Public Schools, the staff of color represent a small percentage of the school population. Like segregated schools, a homogeneous educator workforce is detrimental to society and perpetuates racial bias, stereotypes, and inequitable systems.
