In honor of the Mission Inn's first docent, May Spiller , visitors will be designing and creating their very own hats. At the age of 62, May Spiller became the Inn's first docent in 1939. During her tours through the St. Francis Chapel, Spiller would be reminded of the European tradition where women wore head coverings to church and so she began to sport her elaborate hats.

Begin by designing and drawing your hat out.
Collect the materials and the embellishments you like for your hat.
If you are working with a headband, wrap a small layer of tulle all the way around. Make sure to glue this down and give it a minute to dry.
Start adding on and gluing down the next layer of materials.
Be careful to work in layers and allow the glue to dry in between steps.
Once complete, give your hat a few minutes to dry.
