Primary Genre(s): Punk, Folk, Blues, Gothic
Band Members: Michael Bowser (all instruments and vocals)
Main Influences: The Birthday Party/Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart, The Cramps, Beasts of Bourbon, Butthole Surfers, The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, The Horrors, Andy Prieboy/Wall Of Voodoo, Gentle Ben and His Sensitive Side/Six Ft Hick, Tomahawk/other Mike Patton, The Jesus Lizard, LSD (Life, Sex & Death), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Fall, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Elvis Presley, Danny Elfman, Bernard Herrmann, film soundtracks (especially Italian horror!), and the sheer bleak ugliness we like to call "life"...
The Belligerent Drunks is a 100% solo project, bar some typically fabulous production work from Mr Aaron R. Walker. Although I dared to play a wee bit of guitar on the No Love Lost Never Say Forever album, I decided to make this one defiantly guitar-free, while still aspiring to something heavily influenced by "folk" and "the blues". Think of it as the closest any solo project of mine ever came to The Wretched Villains, and you're getting warmer; though hardly "hot", by any stretch of the imagination.
I'll leave it to the individual to make of it what they will, though I have to say: it's one of my personally proudest musical moments (and certainly my single most satisfied moment, drumming-wise)! I've always prided myself on the relative "uniqueness" of my own work failing all else, and I think this EP certainly qualifies. Will The Drunks ever make a sophomore excursion, or a single live appearance? Only time will tell. But probably not. (And true to the name, I'm fairly sure some of these vocals were recorded in an inebriated state. Don't try this at home, kids!)
SOMETHING IN THE ATTIC
(Lyrics Copyright © 2011 Michael Bowser)
There’s something in the attic, that I ain’t gonna let out
There’s something in the attic, that likes to twist and shout
Yeah, there’s something in the attic, that I don’t wanna let out
There’s something in the attic, and I think that it wants out
There’s something in the attic, that shrieks and throws itself about
Yeah, there’s something in the attic, and I really think that it wants out
There’s something in the attic, and I think that it’s got out
There’s something in the attic, and I think that it’s gotten out
There’s something in the attic, and I think it’s still lurking about…
COMAVILLE
(Lyrics Copyright © 2011 Michael Bowser)
Coma
Torment never over
Half-dead
Intravenously fed
Blackness
No light in the darkness
Half-life
No stars in the dark night
No love
Not from here or above
Free me
From false eternity
Speechless
No sins left to confess
Half-gone
No reason to go on
Please let me die
Please let me die
Please let me die
Please let me die
IT'S NICE TO BE NEEDED
(Lyrics Copyright © 2011 Michael Bowser)
It’s nice to be needed
So empty to be needed no more
So nice to be needed
Such a blessing, to give love and support
‘Cause when you’re no longer needed
The world doesn’t need you at all
It’s nice to be needed
By one who needs love and support
It’s nice to be wanted
By a soul who truly needs your help
So nice to be wanted
By someone who cannot help themselves
‘Cause when you’re no longer wanted
You’re left with no one but yourself
It’s nice to be wanted
By a soul who truly needs your help
It’s nice to be appreciated
By a spirit in need of a lift
So nice to be appreciated
By a lost soul who’s suffered a slip
‘Cause when you’re not appreciated
Your sense of purpose flees your grip
It’s nice to be appreciated
For love is the ultimate gift
