Compass Week is designed to focus on Safety and Basic skills which are the foundation of becoming a great sailor!
We started the week with swim tests to be sure that everyone's lifejacket fits appropriately. Swimming is an important skill to be out on the water in any kind of boat, not to mention a complimentary sport to sailing! We believe that it is so important that we have included lessons and swim team practices in the camp day at no additional cost to you.
Second to safety is a baseline knowledge of sailing terms and rigging so that we can all "speak the same language." This week all of our campers learned the Parts of the Boat, How to Tie Proper Knots, Rigging and De-rigging, and the Points of Sail. We also learned how the weather significantly impacts sailing and the importance of preparing for changing conditions! It's always good to come to camp prepared with layers, refillable water bottle, and sun protection.
To put all lessons into practice, the groups ran rigging races, towing drills and steering practices as well as free time to sail about in their boats!
Midweek Boatventure to the Mentor Lagoons Park: We like to do all types of boating at Crow's Nest so a couple of times each summer we do "Boatventures" off site to new places. Our first Boatventure is to Mentor Lagoons Park, just on the other side of the East Beach. We motor all of our bigger boats over, anchor off the coast line and ferry the kids to the beach using our trusty old Pontoon! We picnic on the shore then go on a Photo Scavenger Hunt trekking through the woods looking for all sorts of crazy things hiding in the woods.
One of the favorite days of camp, we had almost 20 friends join us at camp on Friday! We kicked the day off with a fun day in the pool then took our friends down to the dry sail to learn about sailing. In the afternoon, it was still quite windy so the FJ Adventure group and friends went sailing on Breeze followed by the Opti Gold group on the Contender! The Opti Green and Adventure groups teamed up to get their friends sailing in the Opti's touring the channels of the lagoons.
Representing MHYC at the I-LYA Traveler's Series Regatta #3 both our Opti & Advanced Race Team spent the day in Erie, PA today. The weather was intense and all of our sailors made us proud!
We look forward to seeing everyone on Monday as we kick off Ship Shape Week!
If you need to order lunches for next week, please submit your orders before 9am on Tuesday!
Wednesday we have our Field Trip & Picnic to Edgewater Beach Metro Park to watch the Race Team's compete in the Cleveland Race Week Jr. Sailing Regatta. Please print, sign and return your permission slip on Tuesday.
With day one well under way, we're all appreciating the MHYC facilities and all the different venues we can hold classes. Even with the rainy weather we have accomplished the lifejacket tests, boat rigging, knot practice, reviewing boat parts & the Points of Sail and even practicing capsize drills in the pool!
Here are a few reminders for the week to come:

Bring a Friend to Camp Day is this Friday June 14th! Please have your friend fill out the registration here:
Swim Lessons/Practice starts tomorrow at 9:15am. Don't forget your bathing suit, towel and a change of clothes!
Midweek Boatventure & Woodland Trek is scheduled for Wednesday (weather permitting). It might be a good idea to bring bathing suits, pants and shoes or boots. We just might get lost in the woods! (Good thing we'll know how to use a compass!)
Hi Campers!
If you haven't heard, or seen it yet, Lake Erie is experiencing record level lake levels, and tonight we saw the highest level yet due to wind and air pressure. We are experiencing some *interesting* flooding by the dry sail area and the teen room area, to say the least.
Could the Earthquake have been caused by the extra water in the lake?
Safety is first and foremost. Please remind campers that kids are never to walk in standing water, especially in the dry sail area. We will keep an eye on lake bacteria levels and will make calls accordingly. MHYC's Junior Activities Chair Kathy Allyn, General Manager Jaime Cordova, our Flag line, and our new Harbormaster Mike Jablonski are in constant contact with the Camp Team as we monitor the constantly changing situation.
Thankfully, the weather is expected to be gorgeous for the next several days, and we have a huge, beautiful campus to work with, as well as the adjacent Mentor Lagoons. This should not affect us much, other than the location of your bags and backpacks and taking care when walking around. Tomorrow we will move our camp activities to the upper levels, primarily under the pool deck. We can still use the pool bathrooms and showers/changing rooms.
Thanks for your patience and understanding. The one thing we can’t control is Mother Nature - but we can figure out how to work with her! Be prepared for anything - bring extra change of clothes and also walking shoes - we may be switching around our schedule a bit to accommodate the daily situation.
If anything, we are getting some history-making pictures and stories for years to come. :)
