The ELTHAM WAR MEMORIAL GARDEN
The ELTHAM WAR MEMORIAL GARDEN
The Eltham War Memorial Garden was constructed during the 1950s as part of a larger building project undertaken by the Eltham War Memorial Trust which was established in 1945.
Separately, the Cenotaph was originally located in the grounds of the Eltham RSL in Main Rd near Pitt St. After the closure of the RSL in 2010 and the welcoming of the Montmorency RSL to Eltham members, the wider organization was re-named the Montmorency Eltham RSL.
Subsequently, in 2015 the committee of the MERSL arranged for the cenotaph to be moved to the Memorial Garden area. In addition to the cenotaph, there were also a number of explanatory panels installed to describe the various overseas involvements and conflicts which the Australian military had over the decades.
In 2026 there was significant damage done to the cenotaph. This was repaired and the opportunity was taken to upgrade the overall area of the Garden, including improvements to the explanatory panels which had become faded over time.
The new information displayed on panels around the garden gives some general information focusing on various people connected to the Eltham area who volunteered for military service and who gave their lives while representing Australia. The names of many of them are inscribed on the cenotaph.
The new panels also contain a small QR code which directs visitors to this page on the History & Heritage website where further information is provided (see below and on the Cenotaph page).
