To explore the foundation of Engagement in further detail please see the HDLH document pages 41-45.
This directly correlates with our Standard II: Curriculum and Pedagogy as it states in the subsection "C. Practice: 4. Respond to the uniqueness of individuals and groups of children. They identify appropriate strategies, access the necessary resources and design curriculum to ensure full participation of all children, taking into account ability, cultural and linguistic diversity and Indigenous identity. They provide all children with opportunities for engagement, exploration and expression. " (CECE, pg. 10, 2017). Please note that the foundation of Expression is highlighted throughout many other standards and practice guidelines throughout the document.
At the end of each day, ask yourself, “How much time did I spend connecting (direct and meaningful interactions)? Directing (telling children what to do)? Correcting (telling children what not to do)?” What is your C:D:C ratio?
What meaningful materials are available to children at all times throughout the day in the environment to provide them an opportunity to express themselves in a meaningful way?
Considering that children have “100 languages”, how many ways are there for children to express themselves in your program?
