Resume and Cover Letter General Tips:

• These examples are catered to jobs here at the Rec - They are a great baseline, but always ask someone in the career field you are applying to for more specific advise

  • e.g. Some jobs do not require a skills/summary section and some jobs do

  • This Resume format is not designed for professions like graphic design or marketing 

• Find a Resume format that works for you! No format will make every employer happy.  Learn common practices and then format in a way that you enjoy - This will  make it easier to update as you add more experiences.

• Cover Letters:

  • If you know who  will be handling applications, address them directly. If not, use phrases like "Dear Hiring/Search Committee."

  • Intro Paragraph: Think of as your Thesis Statement 

  • Body Paragraph(s): Use your job experience to reinforce why you are the best candidate for the job. Relate it back to the job description if you have access to it

  • Conclusion: Relate it back to Body and Intro and add how the job can continue to help you grow and develop
