Me Mapping can support student learning in the classroom, school, community and even at home. Me Mapping offers an abundance of possibilities for engaging all students, and especially multilingual learners.
Consider some of the ways you can use Me Mapping in your classroom or school and beyond:
You can celebrate the diversity that exists among students by including Me Mapping as a core activity in a school club or after school program.
You can also increase student confidence by including various Me Mapping activities to complement the core curriculum.
You can introduce Me Mapping at the beginning of the year as a way for your students to get to know each other.
You can build inclusion in your classroom and school by highlighting your students’ languages and prior experiences as assets.
You can include Me Mapping in cross-curricular projects that allow students to use their oral literacies.
Finally, as researchers, we used Me Mapping in a variety of contexts.
We visited multilingual children and youth in their homes and introduced them to Me Mapping so that they could create Me Maps independently.
We organized a sequence of Me Mapping workshops in different community centers where we worked with groups of newcomer children and youth.
We collaborated with teachers to create Me Mapping lessons with activities to prepare students to create Me Maps on different topics as well as follow up activities to complete after creating their digital Me Maps.
We hope that your experiences with Me Mapping will be as rewarding as ours have been!
In a Me Mapping workshop, you can conduct a series of interactive and multimodal identity-focused activities that aim to showcase multilingual learners' lived experiences, and their rich linguistic and cultural repertoires.
Learners engage in activities focusing on important milestones in their lives, their families and friends, experiences at home and at school, languages and cultures, and their hopes and aspirations for their future.
Learners then work individually, in pairs and small groups to create, review, and post a video response using the Flipgrid app to one of our prompts. These videos can be combined to create an integrated Me Map for each learner.
