RATIONALE AND PURPOSE OF THE MODULE
To provide an introduction into current media technologies as they are used in the fields of performing arts, creative arts therapies, and arts research; to develop essential skills and fluency in these technologies in order to use them competently, creatively, and effectively in one's own specific discipline.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
Identify and understand the basic operation of equipment used in current media production (such as audio/ video recording, amplification, and playback devices) and post-production (such as editing and enhancement/effects software); evaluate the situations in which the various types of hardware and software employed most efficiently; apply the appropriate technologies competently and creatively.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
Evaluate the purposes for which specific technologies are used for given fieldwork, documentation, and creative tasks; make aesthetic and cognitive decisions based on these evaluations; recognise how the choice of equipment, recording methods and editing techniques can affect the subjectivity or objectivity of recorded or staged material; demonstrate the ability to conceive and execute a project employing the acquired skills.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
Competently learn to operate a variety of audio and video recording and playback equipment, as applicable; skilfully operate and employ audio and visual stagecraft technology, as applicable; skilfully edit recorded material using current editing software.
CONTACT & CONTENT
Classes will take place in the Mac Lab IW2.39 in the Irish World Academy Building
There will be one session in each video course which will take place in the UL Library Makerspace
Short videos, resources or simple exercises will be posted to Brightspace before each in-person session.
Students can arrange brief final project check-in with Eoin 5PM-7PM on the Wednesday’s of Weeks 9 and 10 if needed.
The module content is divided into groups according to MA courses:
ETHNOGRAPHY FOCUSED GROUP: Wednesdays 13:00-14:00, Weeks 2-5
MUSIC FOCUSED GROUP 1: Wednesdays 13:00-14:00, Weeks 8-11
MUSIC FOCUSED GROUP 2: Wednesdays 14:00-15:00, Weeks 8-11
DANCE FOCUSED GROUP: Thursdays 10:00-11:00, Weeks 2, 4, 6 & 7
