During the early decades of the 20th century, hand-held advertising fans were distributed at the routinely sultry Montgomery County Agricultural Fair in August each year. From a collection of wooden-handled paper fans donated in 2007 comes this patriotic example decorated with the head of an American bald eagle above red and white stripes, an image copyrighted in 1908, and the claim “We Are the People’s Choice.” It advertises the Ontario Drill Co.of Baltimore (a branch of an East Rochester, New York manufacturer of grain drills and other agricultural implements). It is also stamped for an unidentified “W. Mullinix,” who was presumably the local agent.
