This mahogany medical examining table, made c.1880, was used by a Dr. Murphy of Rockville (as marked inside the top drawer). The handsome table has an expandable and adjustable top, supported by a case of drawers and cabinets with ornamental turned corner posts. It bears a small plate for manufacturer Frank S. Betz of Chicago and Hammond, Indiana. By 1906, Betz advertised as the “Surgical and Hospital Supplies of Every Description/ Largest Plant of its Kind in the World.”
The table was donated in 1974 by Dr. Steven Cromwell, Jr. (1925-2015), a successor to Dr. Murphy’s practice. Cromwell was a long-time trustee of the Montgomery County Historical Society and portrayer of Dr. Edward Elisha Stonestreet (1830-1903), who practiced in Rockville from 1852-1903.
