This pair of three-wheeled roller skates, c.1930, was found in the basement of what was presumably Steinberg’s Department Store (called “Stein’s Store” in the records) at 241 East Jefferson Street in Rockville. Their rough condition, however, suggests that they were not overlooked merchandise. Not the more usual quad type, they have three rubber-tired wheels arranged, not in-line, but with two at the back and one at the front. Most of the black and orange paint is gone, except on the wheels. They lack the straps that would have secured them to one’s shoes at the instep and heel. They were found at the time of the store’s 1972 demolition and donated by the Rockville Urban Renewal Project.
