Pam Notes: Some references (mostly Ancestry linkages by people) have Joseph's birth date as October 1846, but the documentation mostly has 1844, so that is what I am listing as the primary birth date. In census data, he ranges from 1844 to 1849 as birth year.
It appears he married Annie in 1870, although the marriage lists it as being filed on January 11, 1871. 1870 was the same year that Annie's first husband died and she had given birth to their second child, Elizabeth. Joseph and Annie went on to have 12 other children themselves.
Note that the Children List to the right lists Fannie as his child. It is assumed that he adopted Annie's previous two children, one of which, Elizabeth, died in 1880. Note Elizabeth is only listed under Annie (not Joseph) in Ancestry.com.
I have not found any Civil War references for him, so he likely did not serve. His age at the beginning of Year 2 of the war would have been 18 (old enough) if born in March 1844; if born in October 1846, he would have only turned 18 in the last months of the war.
In the 1880 census, he is listed as a Farmer. In the 1900 census, his occupation was listed as a Fisherman.
