Reaching our sales goal for yearbooks is one of our main priorities when it comes to marketing. The money we raise off of books and ads goes towards expenses for our future learning opportunities in journalism such as SIPA and MSPA conferences. Our Instagram account is our main point of advertisement for book and ad sales. We post various content such as graphics, video clips, and story posts to encourage students to commemorate their high school years with our annual publication.
In the 2022-2023 school year, the Flashback staff, under the direction of myself and my co-editor, launched the "Signatures and Snowcones" sales campaign with Sno Biz of Oxford, Mississippi. If we met our sales goal of 420 books, then every student who purchased a yearbook this year would receive a snowcone from Sno Biz during the school day in May, and would get to participate in a "signing party" , where students could sign each others' books. We collaborated with the OHS PTO to share all of our marketing content which included social media updates, personal text messages and emails, and in-person sales at school events. I created all the graphic design work for this campaign. With three weeks left to go in our campaign, I am happy to report that we are one-hundred and fifty books away from our sales goal, already selling fifty more books than we did last year.

Our main graphic for the campaign. Watching the tracker go up is a great way for students to be engaged in the campaign.
The tracker powered by Jostens Yearbook Avenue showcasing how far we are from our sales goal.
When students see a graphic similar to something that would appear on their phone as a normal notification, it helps them to remember it. This strategy helps us to sell more books and ads.
To help with expenses of the book, we sell senior ads and business ads. Senior ads are a way for families and friends to congratulate their seniors and recognize their milestone achievement of graduating high school. Our senior ad campaign is run from October to February on our Instagram account, Oxford High School Schoology, and on the OHS website. All money and design is managed by Jostens.
Business ads are sold by our staff members. Each staff member must attempt to sell at least two ads. The approach we use to sell ads is as follows:
Ask the business in person.
Get ad design information (size of ad, color and photo details, font size and type).
Collect money from business.
Create ad for review by business and editor before placement in book.
Write a personal thank you letter to the business for their support of our yearbook.
I oversee the creation of each ad and help each student create an ad that reflects the goals and aesthetic of every business.
The 2023 Senior Ad campaign graphic package. We wanted to appeal to the theme of our 2023 Publication, Chargers Forever, and directly target the graduating seniors and their families.
Our ad sales are organized in a master sheet to keep up with payments and designs. This makes it easier for myself and other staff members to keep payments and deadlines in line.
An example of ads designed by a staff members who were overseen by me. We target some business owners who have children or employees at the high school as a way to show their appreciation and support of the students.
