Objective
Students will identify and describe 2D shapes such as circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles while exploring their characteristics, including the number of sides, angles, and symmetry. They will then apply their understanding by creating an art collage that showcases these shapes in a creative and visually engaging composition. Through this hands-on activity, students will deepen their spatial awareness and ability to recognize shapes in their environment.
Arts Integration
Incorporating visual arts into the lesson, students will use cut-out paper shapes to create an original collage. This process will encourage them to experiment with composition, symmetry, overlapping, and layering. By engaging in this artistic approach, students will visually and kinesthetically reinforce their understanding of shapes, enhancing their creative problem-solving skills while making math concepts more tangible and meaningful.
Assessment
Students will complete their shape collage and present their work to the class, explaining:
The shapes they used and how they identified them.
The attributes of each shape (ex: “My triangle has 3 sides and 3 angles”).
The creative choices they made, such as arrangement, layering, or color selection.
Through this reflective process, students will demonstrate their comprehension of geometric properties, strengthen their communication skills, and connect mathematical learning with artistic expression.
ND Math Standards Met
✅ 2.G.1: Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or equal faces.
Students will not only identify shapes but also describe their attributes while creating their collage.
They will compare different shapes and determine what makes each one unique.
✅ 2.G.3: Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares.
Through cutting and arranging shapes, students will explore halves, thirds, and fourths by folding or cutting paper, connecting math concepts to real-life problem-solving.
This also introduces early fractions in an intuitive and hands-on way.
ND Arts Standards Met
✅ VA:Cr1.2.2: Make art or design with various materials and tools to explore personal interests, questions, and curiosity.
Students will explore different artistic materials (colored paper, glue, scissors) to express creativity while applying mathematical concepts.
The process will encourage self-expression as students design unique artwork while making intentional artistic and geometric choices.
