Overview of my ID Asset

For my final ID asset, I created a procedural video to share with current students and alumni from Kitsap University (pseudonym).

The following eLearning design principles were applied in my eLearning object [1]:

Multimedia principle: Using a combination of screen recording and words.
Contiguity principle: Employing audio and graphics in unison.
Modality principle: Using audio narration to maximize learning achievement.
Redundancy principle: Reducing extraneous processing by using audio narration with graphics.
Coherence principle: Avoiding extraneous words and materials.
Personalization principle: Using a conversational style, a friendly human voice, and polite wording.

Exploring a different way to showcase your professional skills

Commonly an employer will request documents such as a resume or cover letter to better understand who you are as a potential job candidate. Crafting quality professional documents is one way to showcase your skills to employers, but there is a limitation on how much information you can provide about yourself in these documents.

Documents such as a resume or cover letter are less effective at sharing your work process and your learning journey.

A professional portfolio is a much more effective method of allowing employers to view your projects or your work process.

What is a professional portfolio?

A professional portfolio is a curated collection of your professional ‘cabinet of curiosities’ or selected exemplary works that reflect your competencies. Examples of your work vary depending on the industry you are applying to. It could range from art, learning journals, case studies, lesson plans – anything that can reflect your proficiency. It is a tool you can use to continually refine and shape your professional profile as a prospective employee.

Why should you create a portfolio?

When you can create a professional portfolio, you are giving the employer a chance to observe your applied skills and experiences. For example, you can share the process of how you worked through a challenge and applied a solution. This shows your problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Or perhaps you can provide them with a glimpse into your learning journey and how you improved your craft over time. This informs the employer that you are passionate, motivated, and dedicated to the work. A professional portfolio is a great way to show your potential and value as an employee.

There is a plethora of resources available online to help you develop an effective professional portfolio. Here are some free website tools you can use to get started:

You can get very creative with the way you format and customize your site, but the important thing to note is that you should make it consistent and cohesive. And a great way to do that is by engaging in “storytelling”.

What do I mean by storytelling?

If there is a hobby, cause, or interest you have, try to base your work around it. People are interested in getting to know you. When you can share your work through storytelling, you can communicate your qualities more effectively.

Make an appointment with a Career Coach from the Career Center to review your professional portfolio. With a professional, you can receive feedback and identify areas to improve or understand the strengths of your portfolio. Appointments can be made via Handshake.
