The learning design is a framework that guides the decisions for teaching, content, assessments, and technology deployed for learning. Using an instructional design and technology foundation directs a “systemic approach to solving instructional problems” (Roblyer, 2015, p. 6) by incorporating the appropriate instructional design theory or learning theory to create competencies in the learning design.
The coursework for ISDT touched on several learning theories and instructional design theories that help create a learning design foundation. A learning design foundation should assist in determining how people learn by analyzing the learners, the strategic design and development of pedagogy, the strategic design and development of learning activities, and the purposeful improvement through evidence-based evaluations (Robyler, 2015). The ADDIE model is a great tool for creating instructional materials or courses.
My learning design competency is supported by my experience using the ADDIE model. I used the ADDIE model when I interned for Dr. Cheng for ISDT 5319 Critical Analysis of Instructional Software. The objective of my internship was to create and develop the course. Therefore, I had to analyze the presented topics and design an outline to create the course through the Blackboard LMS while maintaining a learner-centered approach. Once the course was developed, the course was implemented and evaluated to ensure instructional materials, discussions, and assessments were working as expected. The ADDIE model can as so be used to create a solution for the results of my research topic for adult learners who are women and the challenges they face with the technologies used for learning. Additionally, connectivism learning theory may also provide a solution to help women students having issues with learning technologies through digital collaboration.
The connectivism learning theory brings people together using digital platforms. This action creates new ways of learning for individuals. For example, using connectivism learning theory could result in using Facebook or Tik Tok to provide guidance on new learning technologies or snippets of the learning technologies.
The needed competencies for learning design link my topic to an instructional design theory and a learning theory. Furthermore, a learning design framework is created by applying my experience with the ADDIE model and the connectivism learning theory. Finally, the learning design framework may result in training development, course development, or digital learning through Facebook or Tik Tok.
