First Thoughts About Resigned/Married Priests Stories began with Jackie Lovejoy’s Email Sent by CITI Ministries

To Wives of Married Priests

RentAPriest <rentapriest@aol.com>

To: WIVES OF RESIGNED ROMAN CATHOLIC PRIESTS:

In this year of the priest, where do we, wives of married priests find affirmation? Who celebrates us? In whom do we find a support system? What is our legacy?

These questions have been mine for many years (married to a priest for 39 years). I have asked for a discussion of these and other questions about our role as wives of married priests, and it now seems others have asked as well, so the opportunity has been given through CITI during the Year of Married Priest celebration. I ask, "Are there other wives with similar concerns? It may be loneliness, fear, hurt, resentment or something else.

I am writing to see if there is any interest in sharing and exploring our legacy. A suggested

location is Charlotte, N.C. in mid March or April of 2010. Charlotte is a major hub and therefore accessible from most airports without a change of planes.

Meeting would begin Friday evening with sharing of backgrounds. Format on Saturday would consist of a panel of priests' wives followed by break-out sessions. After a break for lunch, there would be sharing of ideas generated from the panel and discussion groups. The day would end in a prayerful way.

Please fill out the questionnaire below and email interest, concerns, suggestions by Nov 2 to me at jameslovejoy@att.net with cc: citiministries@aol.com or call Jackie Lovejoy at cell phone 678-642-3124.  Jim and I will be visiting our youngest son and his family in Maine from Oct. 26th until November 13th. However you can email or  call on my cell number anytime while we are away. CITI would like an initial report for their board meeting on November 14.

Remember: THERE WOULD BE NO MARRIED PRIESTHOOD....WITHOUT US!!!"

PEACE!

Jackie Lovejoy.

Dear Married Priests,

By now you have probably read the article that was so wonderfully coordinated by Jackie and Jim Lovejoy, which featured about 300 words each written by wives of married priests about their marriage and background. We are looking for maybe 5 or 6 more for the June issue.

It's time married priests' wives tell their stories. Please send to jameslovejoy@att.net within the next two weeks along with a photo of you as a couple. For reference, you can either review what was done in the printed newsletter or you can go to the website and click "newsletter."

Thanks so much. It's an important new section of the newsletter that tells the Rent A Priest story and we really want to keep it alive...but we need your help in order to do it.

Louise

When Judy Lorenz became president she sent this email recognizing the stories written by wives of married priests and encouraging participation in Jim Lovejoy’s project which would become “Married Catholic Priests of Integrity”:

Dear Friends,

As things finally settle in with our Citi Ministries office in Bowie, MD I am now tending  to several requests that had been presented to me as I took over the reins for Louise.

I apologize for delays and ask for your continued patience as my assistant Debbie and I learn the ropes and perform our duties with advisement from some of our local GYPs and of course continued contact with Louise.

My purpose today is to give my belated but whole-hearted support to Jim Lovejoy.  Jim has offered to create an anthology of your stories in the hopes of spreading the word about the married priest ministry.

Many of you may have read the articles in our past newsletters submitted by married and partnered priest couples. Each has an amazing story to tell and I believe the good work and testimony of your journeys should be documented and shared by as many people as possible.

You are a part of Church History whether you see yourselves that way or not. The greater community has much to learn from your experiences and you will most likely learn a whole lot about yourselves as well by writing your story.

Please consider participating in Jim’s project. He has received some positive responses, but he needs many more.  As they say, the time is now.

Please read the attached letter from Jim and let him know if you are interested.

Thanks so much and thank you for your ministry.

Peace, Judy

Just received Judy's email about your project, Jim. I applaud your work.

And I'll get back to you once I get back from the SOA Watch gathering in Columbus, GA. We have a Progressive Catholic Coalition representing Call to Action, CORPUS-usa, Federation of Christian Ministries, Roll Away the Stone, The Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests, & Women’s Ordination Conference. These reform organizations sponsor representatives to give information to the thousands who gather there to work at closing SOA/WHINSEC at Ft. Benning because of the human rights violations committed in Latin America by so many of the graduates. But then, you've probably heard of this effort and the conscientious statement of Roy Bourgeois about justice and women's ordination.

I'd be glad to share whatever will be of value for posterity.  --jack

Jack,

Thank you for your reply on the 13th.  Sounds like you have a busy meeting ahead of you. Best of luck. Yes, I know of Roy Bourgeois and am disappointed in how Maryknoll has handled this. I studied at Maryknoll back in the late 40's and 50's

before leaving  for the Diocese of LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

I need your story, Jack. I have received 15 so far but need double that to  create

a published work. If you know of others who would share their "journey" with a

little encouragement. I would appreciate hearing from them. You have probably

seen Judy Lorenz's email endorsing this project. I believe the time is NOW before

we begin to leave this earth and I see this as my last contribution.

Peace.

To All:

Based on the recommendation of those I have received responses from, I am rethinking the 1000 word limitation. For those interested I would now say, take the space to write your thoughts and forget about the limitation.

I am very grateful to all of you who have responded to my proposal and am more than satisfied with the results. As I said in my proposal I would like to have as many returned as possible by the end of the year, but I have no intention of refusing those that come later. This is a long process and will take months to

accomplish. If possible I would like to have pictures: of you as a married priest working with couples or individuals and one of you and your wife. If married with children, a picture of the family as well.

My only disappointment is that so many have ignored my request. This is hard work. I think I deserve an email telling me you have no interest and why. Perhaps its because you don't know me and I don't know you.

I have the same gratitude and appreciation that any of you do for Louise. And we owe it to her that we are still practicing our vocations.

However, that does not say that we shouldn't be critical when we feel that there have been omissions in the process. My first concern is that we have a Board of Directors but in the ten years I have been affiliated with CITI, I have never seen any minutes of their meetings. For instance I don't know what suggestions from the

membership have been discussed or acted upon.  Louise herself recently admitted in an email to all that the costly open letter to the Bishops in the Washington Post, over a year ago resulted in nothing and the advertisements for Rentapriest on the CBS

message Board circling Rockefeller Center in Times Square for a month brought minimal response.

I know that Louise had the best intentions in printing the Testimonials from priests wives and she took the time effort and money to insert them in the 2011Spring and Summer Newsletter. when the NCR refused to print them, but I have heard nothing as to any effect they might have had.

Now, I am involved in this project to collect married priests' stories of their transitions from clerics to married priests with active ministry. This is a story that needs to be told, but after all the work is done and our efforts reach publication I want to know how it has been received.

I said earlier that we simply don't know each other and that should not be. I know of no organization with a purpose that does not have an annual conference to come face to face with each other and really dialogue about what is working and what is not. For

some it will be impossible due to work and distance to make this meeting, but then there should be regional meetings for everyone to vote and work on what comes out of the annual conference.

I am sorry if I have surprised and hurt many good people by my remarks but I believe we should leave the bishops out of this, accept their rantings about how we (especially those who left shortly after Vatican II) have scandalized the Faithful and made vocations to the priesthood much more difficult. We have a mission. Let's be about it with every means at our disposal.

Challenge me if you like for what I have said but don't just shrug it of and go on with business as usual!

Respectfully submitted,

Jim Lovejoy

Jim and all,

I simply do not know where to start--after Jean died I had a message from Jean while at the monastery I frequent--just got back today from 5 days there. I sat and wrote---17 single spaced pages---obviously more than 1,000 words!! and that is just the beginning and does not include much which could be said.

Where to start! This is a very hard time for me this year---the 3rd Christmas without Jean---horrible.

I need to take a pass on this.

Hello,

I took a break on the Anthology until after Christmas, but want to re-engage with all of you especially those who are  now working on narratives. As I said earlier, I made a mistake in limiting each narrative to 1000 words. That was unrealistic and I apologize. I am now asking you to take as much room as you need  to accomplish the task. Also, I am extending the time for writing these narratives until June 1, 2012,

I know that a number of you are having some difficulty in deciding what to write  and

where to start. That is not uncommon. When I wrote my short autobiography about

priest and parent I really needed help and some sort of format. Ed Minderlei,MP. from Old Orchard Beach in Maine was one who has already sent his in and it is excellent. I asked him if he would mind if I forwarded it to the List. He approved so

it is complete in the attachment. Please take the time and read it. I believe it will be helpful in developing you own story.

AND I NEED MORE OF YOUR OWN UNIQUE STORIES BEFORE DETERMINING HOW IT CAN BECOME A PUBLISHED WORK.

Thank you,

Jim Lovejoy

Hi Jim,

Hope you and Jackie are enjoying the holidays.

I don't mind if you send my essay to the CITI website. The copy I'm attachng here is an edited one so could you please replace the one you have with this one.

I'll keep thinking of an appropriate title.  It might be good to ask all the M.P. for their title suggestions.  That will give you a better chance of ending up with the best title possible.

Happy New Year.

Hi Ed,

Thank you for the pictures. I am going to hold those in abeyance until I finish the texts and see where we are.. It was Judy's idea, and a good one to ask for

pictures but we need to see what we come up with as a format.I have been kicking

around titles for this book.  I did jot one down: RE-OPENING THE WINDOWS OF THE VATICAN..If you have any idea share them

I need one moe favor.I have discovered that many of those trying to write

their stories seem to be having difficulty in demonstrating the passage from the canonical state to the married Priesthood. I think they may need some help getting started. I have found your narrative and that of Pat Callahan on the west coast to be the best I have received and I wonder if you would mind my putting them on the citi list. My only problem is that while I kept copies I don't have the capability of up loading them. Would you mind sending me another attachment with the copy of your story. Then I can forward them to the list for review

Thanks again Ed, for your help. This is a tough project, I have already alerted the

List that they should disregard the 1000 words. They are encouraged to take the space they need, and I am extending the deadline for receiving nnarratives for several months.

Your Married Priest Story Project

John P. Wentland <jackwentland@gmail.com>

to Jim

Hi Jim,

I hope the season of hope and joy has encouraged you in your project of the year and beyond.

As a writer, I offer my encouragement and my pledge to get "my story" to you. I have been remiss in not getting this response to you sooner.

After reading my friend Bob Scanlan's soulful 12/13 email to you, I was touched. I knew Jean before she and Bob wed. Bob and I served in the Diocese of Rockford together, I ordained in 1963, he a few years later. I left the diocese in 1985 after an extended 2-year leave of absence. The diocese, actually Art O'Neill, was generous in extending my "six months leave" a few times over the objections of the Personnel Director so I'd be covered by Diocesan health care benefits until I obtained full-time employment, which took a little longer in that previous recession period.

Interestingly, the bishop, Art O'Neill--92 years of age on Dec 13--was the assistant at St. James, Rockford, when I was in 4th to 7th grade there. And the present bishop of Rockford, Tom Doran, was a grade ahead of me there and taught me "altar Latin" in preparation for being an altar boy.

My story is a bit out of the ordinary. When I left the diocese, it was from having lived in the Bishop's Residence for two years. I moved to the D.C. area and had no one in mind for marriage. But after marrying in 1989, Deb and I were together ten years and happily married until I started having prostate difficulties. She found a girl friend and divorced me.

I had submitted to the process of petitioning for "laicization" with then, Fr. Tom Doran, head of the Diocesan Tribunal, along with the now installed Bishop of Bismarck, N.D., David Kagan, and Fr. Charlie McNamee, who had been scout chaplain when I was in Boy Scouts, and with whom I'd been chaplain at a Scout Cathoree in 1970. My petition, I learned after numerous inquiry letters over fourteen years, was never submitted. When I finally obtained an appointment on February 11, 1998, with the three principals of the hearing process, Tom Doran, now being Bishop, explained that since the petition would have not received a positive response from Rome, he never submitted it. It had been sitting in the Diocesan file since August 5, 1986. He is a "Roman" and having served on the Holy Roman Rota, knew about these things. It is curious to me that while in the process of petitioning, Tom had counselled me that my statement should indicate that, if not granted this petition, I was "in danger of losing my immortal soul" or words to that effect. And that meant that now, for fourteen years, he had not considered it important to tell me the petition was not sent. Since the "administrators" were not enthusiastic about submitting the petition and even less enthusiastic about informing me of the "non-submission," I had no qualms about demurring on the invitation Tom offered to "get it in order" and have my petition resubmitted.

I find myself smiling about this when I review the correspondence surrounding these events. I am, then, what might have been called in previous times a "renegade priest" though I prefer to refer to myself as a non-laicized "freelance priest."

I am so fortunate now to be living in Connecticut with a friend who also grew up in Rockford and who is a "raised-and-educated-Catholic-now-turned-anti-religious-atheist". We have the greatest discussions. And I am happy continuing the ministry of justice and peace I've always carried out and a post-canonical 24-year ministry of marriage preparation and celebration. https://sites.google.com/site/1iquelyours/

That's as much as I have "written down the bones" of the story. I'll get the fuller version to you as soon as I add some flesh to it.

Success in getting a better response. If there's anything I can do to assist in getting guys to respond, I'm at your service.

Good to hear from you again Jack.

You have been very busy with a number of great reform organizations. I hope the meeting you recently attended was successful in many ways. My wife was a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame back in the 60's and while attending graduate school at the University of Detroit had the privilege of meeting Bishop Gumbleton and was invited to dinner with a number of priests at the Bishop’s Residence. She saw the very human and inclusive side of the bishop as they were all going in to dinner. Jackie was in street dress but was wearing an abbreviated, but required head piece. Bp. Gumbleton turned to her and very gently said. "I am not wearing my hat, my dear, so you don't need to wear yours." Jackie likes to tell this story about the Founder of Pax Christi.

I like what you wrote Jack. These stories need to be told and understood by the laity.

I look forward to your next installment. The 1000 word restriction no longer applies and I have extended the time to receive narratives to June 2012.  One way you could help is to use your influence to get priests from the Federation to offer their stories to the book.

Take care and keep in touch.

And forgive me for not remembering the previous connection I had with you and Jackie back in the early 1980's in the "Sunday Bunch" with Pat and Carl Hemmer, the Davis', Lutz's, Jennings', Kerns' and all those wonderful people in the DC area.

And I remember so well how I admired your adventuresome spirit as you chose to "take the money and run" in retirement with your family to take over that New England B&B. And I remember stopping by Hiram Alden House in Belfast on my first trip to Maine with Custom Book—the Church Milestone Commemorative Book-publishing company my co-worker Herb Derwart and I represented. What a wonderful visit that was, renewing old acquaintances and seeing the work you'd done to restore and upgrade the home.

I'd been saying to myself, I know that I know that name from somewhere. And then looking through my address book, I found your address at Hiram Alden Inn in Belfast, Maine.

Where are you living now?

I'll see what I can do about getting word out about the "story" project. There's a Southern New England group of about 10 CORPUS-FCM members that gathers at least yearly at Thanksgiving-Christmas. I'm not sure if any of them are aware of the project. They will hear from me about it. Forwarding your email message about it will help.

All the best for the new year to you, Jackie and family!  --jack

Hi Jack,

It is a small world isn't it?  Your name did sound familiar but I had no idea that we knew you through "Sunday Bunch".  That was a good group of married priests and their wives. We have kept in touch with Carl and Pat Hemmer and they usually stay with us on their way to Florida each year. Carl has agreed to provide us with his narrative as well. Thank you for the pictures. Wow, were we ever that young?

We moved south after selling our B&B and now live in Woodstock, Ga, about 30 miles north of Atlanta. I worked as a mobile Notary until 2008 when I lost my job due to the banking collapse. I was 80 then and had some health problems. We live very close to our daughter and her family and our oldest son on the eastern part of Georgia. Our other son still lives in Maine with his wife and three children. We hope things work out so that we can visit them this summer. I will be 84 this June and Jackie will be 75

Thanks again for offering to talk to the married priests in Southern New England. I could us their narratives.

Keep in touch.

Thanks for catching me up on family and location, Jim.

Interesting that you live just off the path I travel every November driving with a NE group down to commemorate the lives of the Salvadoran Jesuit Martyrs and others at the School of the Americas [WHINSEC] Watch in Columbus at the gates of Fort Benning. At the same time I visit with my brother Tom who lives there. We grew up in Rockford, Illinois, but are now two of three brothers transplanted to other climes.

You age well, Jim and Jackie. As we know, age is a matter of the mind. . .if you don't mind, it doesn't matter. I'm just entering my 75th year and love what I do. . . and that's part of the story that keeps getting written. The content of the attachment:

To All members of CITI:

I want to thank all those who have written or are working on their stories for the Anthology.

I wish that I didn't feel compelled to write each of you once again, but I have no choice..

I am dumbfounded that so many appear to have no interest in participating in an effort

to inform many Catholic lay people of our existence as a married priesthood anxious to serve

their needs.

The recent New York Times report that “A Cohort of Married Roman Catholic Priests

Are on the Way” [available at https://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/07/us/married-roman-catholic-priests-are-testing-a-tradition.html] will be news to many people until they realize that the author of the new book is an Episcopal priest convert to Catholicism who is a leader in the Pope's newly constructed “ordinariate" allowing Protestant minister converts to be ordained as Roman Catholic priests. They will take over Catholic parishes along with their wives and children. Meanwhile those of us who left the clerical state in protest over life-long mandated celibacy as a condition for ordination remain "persona non grata".

Most of us have no desire to return to that clerical structure but we are the married priests who have responded to the call from scandalized inactive Catholics who are well aware of the sexual abuse of children by "celibate" priests. Abusers were protected by most bishops until media whistle-blowers confirmed hierarchical complicity and forced them to own up to their betrayal of those in their trust.

I, for one have found over the past 10 years since I have resumed ministry with CITI that almost no one who comes to me to officiate at their marriage, had a clue about a married priesthood. Most thought of us as "ex-priests". We still have our work cut out for us. We need to inform the public that we are very much Roman Catholic Priests. We never left the priesthood.

All I have asked of you is to tell your unique stories and make them available for the Anthology. We have been given this great opportunity by Louise Haggett and a small group of supporters to once again exercise our God-given right to minister to thousands of marginalized Catholic laity. I am not asking you to pay for the study or do anything else than write and provide some pictures of your ministry.

If I cannot get enough of you to participate in a book, I will do a pamphlet because I have promised those who have taken time to write their stories of transition that they will be printed for publication.

Don't do it because I am asking you, but because you owe it to yourself and the thousands of priests who have been ostracized by the Institution for having the courage of their ( and your) convictions.

At the very least, take a moment to tell me why you do not care to participate and why this is not a worthwhile venture..

Our new President, Judy Lorenz has been super in her encouragement and belief that this can come to fruition.

Thank you and may God bless your work.

to me

Hello Jack,

I have given a great deal of thought to your suggestion that I consider using the Internet/website rather than publishing a book on the Anthology. I have also talked to others and received the same advice so I plan to do as you suggest.

I have weighed the two options and find the only preference for the book is that it has been the traditional way to go. On the other hand when I consider using the internet, there are numerous advantages:

(1) The ease of using the Internet and ability to edit as needed, without re-publication

(2) Modern means of communicating and promoting

(3) Much less expensive

(4) Gradual release of Information ( do not need too many stories up front)

(5) Reach a far greater population

(6) Appeal to a selected readership

(7) Use a variety of media sources ( e.g  CITI/Rentapriest, Corpus/Federation.

Individual web sites: Cana Ministries which I am on now, etc.

I will need to run this by Judy Lorenz. I think she will see the advantages, and we won't need to seek $ help from CITI.

First though, I would like to quickly chat with you. If you don't mind and would be home tonight, I would like to call you at 9:00 when my free cell phone minutes kick in.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

Judy has already agreed to ask Louise to do a preface (explaining the origin of CITI and I have ordered the latest book by Fr. Richard McBrien, "The Church: The Evolution of Catholicism "(a review of the last 50 years since Vatican II) This is important I believe to lay the foundation for this Collection of  stories by married priests.

Hope to talk to you tonight.

Brother priests,

For a number of reasons I have decided to take a new approach to the publication

of married priests' stories.

After receiving this suggestion from one of the married priests who is writing

his story, I gave it much thought and concluded that using the internet was a better idea than trying to put  this project into book form. I have conferred with Judy Lorenz and she has agreed it makes sense.

A book will take a lot more time...and money. It will be static once written. I couldn't make changes or add stories. It may rapidly become dated since society and the Church are changing almost more rapidly than we can keep up with.

Whereas, the internet is more fluid. I can begin almost immediately to publish your stories. I can add more stories as they are written and I can easily make changes as needed. Perhaps one of the best reasons for doing this is the cost.

Any cost will be minimal. Our daughter, who is a teacher has the knowhow to do this, has written books and is very knowledgeable in her understanding of the uses of the internet. My wife is also a teacher and  is an English major.

I am sharing with all of you a draft of the Introduction and my story as a sample. Your stories will all be different but they will reflect your own transition experience.

I appreciate the work that many of you are doing in composing your stories.

Please keep it up and get me your final version as soon as you can. I will release a few to start with and keep adding. Now, there is no limit on time. I apologize again for initially limiting you to a thousand words. Very unreasonable on my part since I see how difficult it was in writing my own story. I hope more of you will see the value in doing this. I hope to link to more sites than Rentapriest/Citi Ministries.  If you have a web site you could add it to yours and perhaps

The benefit of more readily receiving marriage and other requests for service. If

you have pictures on your web, I could use copies of those.

Please feel free to ask me any questions or make your own suggestions.I just

want to get this out to the public without too much delay.

Thank you for your support and words of confidence.

Thank you for your work and for this very good entry.  It covers all the ground it needs to.  What many of us write will be different because of life histories.  Mine will wrestle with theology somewhat more.  Some of us lack the apostolic history of many of you; hence the stories will be different. Thank you, Jack. I'm glad you could retrieve the web site. Thank God my daughter is the brains behind this effort . I have to listen more carefully to her instructions.

As soon as you can complete your story, get it to me and I will email it to her to be placed on the web. I would like 3 color photos, if possible, of your priesthood.

One should be of you and your wife. Also, I need to know what you want at the end of the story for contact information.

I will have more to say about the web site once we are ready to make it operational.

Hi JIm,

I went to the website and was surprised that the articles were opened in MS Word.  I'm not up on the internet, but would this be a problem if someone might want to open a story and change it to suit themselves?  I guess you can do this with most stuff on the internet, but I hope it will not be easier because it is opened on one's own personal computer with a Word program, instead of a web browser.

Hi Pete,

You have raised a good question. I do know that only members have access to sites, and they need to request from me as owner of the site to be allowed in to make any changes, additions to a particular married priest's story.

I need to ask my daughter who is the developer of this web site, how that works for outsiders to get information. As soon as I talk to her, I will get back to you.

We are still working on the web site so it will not be available until we have any potential problems worked out.

This is all new to me and I am learning as I go.

Thank you for raising a very legitimate question.

Pete,

I just talked to my daughter and she checked with her husband who is the computer expert.

The only one who can make changes is myself as the owner of the site.

Members who I approve can make comments, request changes , etc., but they cannot make changes on their own.

Individuals (non-members) who are looking for information (requesting

a priest to officiate at their wedding, etc.) can reach any member and read their story but would have to contact that priest  via email to reach him directly.

I hope this answers your question.  I welcome all members to contact me at anytime with questions. That is the only way we can make this operative and safe for each of you.

I will get back to you Monday about your story, What I need is 3 pictures (color), perhaps one of you and your wife and two others of ministry. I need a title of the story and your name, email and website and phone # if you want it at the end of your story, and if you have saved your story on your computer, please send it to me again. I have a copy but when I changed computers I lost the originals.

Thanks,

Just some tips on the new web site.  As we try to remove some obstacles to viewing

the new Married Priests of Integrity Web site, you should apply for membership as

married priests. Just go to the logo on site in the top right column and apply for membership. Shutterfly will send us your request automatically and you will be accepted. This should help in viewing the stories in less time. I am working with

Shutterfly to see if we can get access for you as a member to exclusively make

additions, corrections, etc.on your story In the meantime, if you need any help use the comment block.

Right now, I have three additional stories ready to add.. Bob Scanlan, Greg  Zimmerman and Carl Hemmer. I will add more as I make contact with others who have indicated interest.

Thank you for your patience.

2. to be able to make changes, corrections, etc to stories (as you did today to Louise's contribution.)

3. to add pictures received on my computer to the proper story on the website.

4. to be able to send stories that have been received, as part of an email, and not as an attachment.

Once I can do that myself, I will not need to take up your time or my daughter's when you have better use for your time. However, without your help, I would be in big trouble.

Hi Jim,

I've included the "Alone Against the Vatican" and Bio of Heinz-Jürgen Vogel to MPI site. Take a look at the site to see if it's all right.

I will see to doing step-by-step instructions for the operations you want to be able to do yourself on the website. Once I have the instructions written, I'll send them to you, and we can go through the process together. In the meantime, assisting with putting up materials on the website takes up my time in a way that is a pleasure. What could be a better use of my time than being of service to the married priest community? And when Jackie wants to get wivesofmarriedpriestsofintegrity.org started, I'm here. :-)

In preparation for that instructional session, let me ask: do you have pictures that have been submitted that you want to upload to the MPI website?

I'll get back to you a bit later.

Blessings and greet your Jackie affectionately from me. And in case I didn't say it earlier, congratulations to both of you as new grandparents. My greetings to your daughter--the new mom--as well!  --jack

Hello Jack,

Thank you for your email today. I looked at the website and am very pleased with the way you entered Heinz Vogels story and his bio. The addition of a picture was a plus. He never sent any pictures. I appreciate your efforts. It really helps to have one who knows what he is doing. I will be sending you another story this weekend..Don Horrigan.

Do you happen to know him?

When you submit your story Jack, I would like 3 color pictures as well. Perhaps one of you and your wife, and two

others of your ministry. It's not mandatory, of course, but It was Judy Lorenz that suggested it.

Thanks again and will be in touch.

Jim

P.S.  Jackie appreciated your offer to help her with a like website for wives of married priests. Since Rosanne Santos suggested it to her a month or so ago, she was interested but not sure that she is up to it at this time. She plans to call Rosanne and talk to her about it.

I am mailing you the story for Don Horrigan because I don't have the original  attachment. I had to make some corrections on the front page. I hope you can manage to upload this to the website. I also sent you the info for his Contact Sheet.

As I add others for you, I will try to get them to send as attachment. I am slowly contacting the ones who are in the process of writing to see if they have changed their original attachments to me.... in any way.

Thanks, Jim. My finding the picture of Heinz was the resulted of a search on the 'Net.  There's hardly anything you can't find there.

Yes, you mentioned in your email of May 2nd that you were sending me Don Horrigan's entry. I'll look for it.

If contributions are not being sent as attachments, Jim, perhaps you could send a note to contributors that that is the way you prefer them to be submitted. However, don't fret on my account over the format in which folks submit their work. The easiest way for you to get those submissions to me is to just forward any emails with their contributions to me after you've reviewed them and saved them to your computer archive. Once you forwarded them, I can edit them for uploading to the website as I did with Heinz' entry. Actually, I can edit them and return them to you, after editing, ready for your archiving them. I assume you want to keep original submissions, and save them to some portable medium for future and historical reference. Forwarding those emails saves you a lot of manipulation of emails and materials. I can handle them at this end, no matter how they're submitted. Even "copy and paste" works for me.

And two promises from me:

Onward on this project I'd compare to the works of Tim Unsworth (The Last Priests in America: http://www.amazon.com/The-Last-Priests-America-Conversations/dp/0824511395) John A. O'Brien (The Priesthood in a Changing America; Why Priests Leave  http://www.amazon.com/Why-Priests-Leave-Intimate-Stories/dp/B0007E9CJO/ref=cm_lmf_tit_2 ), Anthony Kowalski (Married Catholic Priests: Their History, Their Journeys, Their Reflections http://www.amazon.com/Married-Catholic-Priests-Journeys-Reflections/dp/0824523490/ref=cm_lmf_tit_1 ) and Joseph Fichter (America's Forgotten Priests: What They Are Saying http://www.amazon.com/Americas-Forgotten-Priests-What-saying/dp/B0006BU3PU/ref=cm_lmf_tit_5 )  and the other great works having a profound influence on the Church of the future--the continuing story. You've created an

ever-expanding medium that allows the newer stories to be shared as the history continues to unfold. And these stories are being told through the words written down by those who lived them, rather than through an author who collected them in a published volume. As those of a younger generation say, "Awesome!"

What you've created, Jim, reminds me a lot of the important point that, unlike those who hold to a static view of scripture, we know that the Word of God continues beyond The Book of Revelation, unfolding in our day and infusing each moment with His presence in these wonder-filled signs of the times for the People of God.

Thank you for the opportunity you've given me to contribute in some small way to this God-touched project!

A Big Hug of gratitude to both you, Jackie and your children . . . and grandchildren, especially the newest one!   --jack

I just received another story from one of  our members who lives in New York. He sent me several entries and I will see how they can be merged into one narrative. He told me to  use the material as I see fit. Besides his story, one of the added pieces is a terrific letter he sent to Pope Benedict.

This is working out great. I am extremely satisfied with the stories that have been submitted.

John Hauck Story

May 10, 2012, 9:30 PM

james lovejoy <jameslovejoy@att.net>

to me

Hi again, Jack,

John Hauck's story is not that long but he has additional material that I think is very good and would like your opinion on how much I should include.

If we print it all, I would put it in the following order:

(1) What Carmel means to me. (Jack's obvious love and respect for the Order).

(2) The story itself and I think this should be his Title for the story  -CAN YOU DRINK THIS CUP?

(3) and (4)  His powerful letters to Pope Benedict in 2011 and to his bishop Cardinal Dolan this year.

(5) A wonderful tribute to his mother-in law who died a month ago.

If we leave everything in, how would you tie them together?

Some Questions:

1.  Could you add contact information for three of the stories/

Greg Zimmerman:  email: frgreg1936@yahoo.com phone:  630-515-9119

Don Kaple   email: donaldkpl@gmai.com   phone770-667-3072

Heinz-Jurgen Vogels: Buschhoverner Str 30D-53347 Alfter  email:  H-JVogels@t-online.de   phone: 0228/645466

John Hauck :  40 Fuller Terrace, Albany, N.Y. 12205 email: jackhauck@yahoo.com

2.  Can you move my pictures from where they are to my story below?

3. Is there a way to replace my pictures with a "rotation of pictures" taken from the pictures on the lead page of several stories? e.g. one picture from each story.  Does this make sense?

4. Finally, is there a way to speed up the process? Some of the stories take 30 seconds to a minute to view the file. Others come up almost immediately?

I am forwarding you Hauck's email next with the attachments.

Hope you can follow this..

Jim

Thanks for making the correction, I thought you could, and then I went back to your email where you told me you could edit the work. I hope most of the stories will not need corrections. But it happens, and I am grateful that you are willing to do this.

Prior to Jim Petru's story, I sent you one from John Hauck. I may have sent it incorrectly, so I will send it again. It is a little

involved so take your time with it. He sent me some information in addition to his story and I asked you what you thought about including everything. I will send it out right after this email.

Please let me know if you get it. Thanks much.

Jim

Hi Jim,

I'm the webmaster for the website of Jim Lovejoy's website "Married Catholic Priests of Integrity." My story will be posted before long once I complete it.

Jim was concerned about editing a typo in you work. He wrote me:

"I found only one small typo error. It is on page 3, paragraph 2, line 3. He left out a word ("was") before not quite."

So I write to let you know the correction was made.

Thanks for you contribution.  --jack

Hi Jim,

Sorry not to get back to you sooner. My wife's Mom has been sick and died this past month and that's kept us busy all month.

I'm attaching some files - and I think I did it the right way.  But I'm not good with the computer.

(Elizabeth) At her funeral Mass I did the Gospel and the homily.

(Can you drink this cup?) That's what I sent to you originally.

(Catholics leaving the Church) what I sent to the bishop, the cardinal....

(What Carmel means to me) My time as a Carmelite (Howie in May) to the Pope.

Jim, you can use these any way you want.  I included the funeral homily as an example of what married priests can do and are doing.

The Carmelite piece talks a little about being a "religious" priest. The other pieces give a hint as to how some of us may feel about

what is going on currently in the church.

I'm not sure what a "contact page" is.

I'll have to scout around to see what photos I have that I could.  Would they have to be sent over the internet - or could they be mailed.

Let me know, JACK

Subject: Married priests' stories

Hello Jack,

I last corresponded with you many months ago. I hope that you are still interested in having your story printed in our new website: www.marriedpriestsofintegrity.shutterfly.com

As you may know, I changed my plans early this year and because of a suggestion from one of our CITI married priests, I am using the internet rather than a published book to share the stories of married priests with the public. I am doing this for two primary reasons. First, it is not costing anyone money, whereas a published book, even if it were self-published like a book I wrote in 2007, it would cost more than I could ever come up with. Second, the

internet is enabling me to be much more flexible. We now have 12 stories already in print and I can add more as they come to me.

Furthermore this will be a continual publishing of married priests' stories as long as their is interest. Judy Lorenz, our new president, has assured me that we will be linked to Rentpriest.com this summer after she undertakes a major revision of the Rentapriest site. After that I will seek to find more search engines.

If you are willing, I can print your initial story (or any changes you would like to make) and I would like to add your excellent letter to Pope Benedict (June 11, 2011.

I will also need a contact page from you as to what contact information you would like.

Would it be possible to send me both of these again by attachment. Unfortunately, I only have a copy and not your original attachment.

Finally, at your convenience, could you send me 3 color photos, perhaps one of yourself and your wife, and two more of your current ministry.

I do hope that you will get back to me. I am extremely pleased with what I have received to date.

As someone said, after reading them . "While there is a very noticeable 'thread' that runs through all of them, each one is uniquely reflective of the individual's experience."

Hope to hear from you soon.

Good morning Jack,

Your plan sounds good. Whenever you are ready just let me know.

I have one  immediate concern. Everyone of the stories you have uploaded come up immediately\when I click on  but some of Jennifer's take anywhere from 20 seconds to over a minute.

Could you check on the following:  Mclellan ( this takes well over a minute), Callahaan, Pelletier, Riler and Scanlan.  The rest are fine.

Is there something she did wrong in uploading them or can you tell?  I appreciate it if you could look into this.

Thanks, Jack.

Seems that the response to your question is that these files include pictures, adding to the kb [kilobyte] size of the file. In addition, it may make a difference in download time that the files you mention also are saved as MS Word 97-2003 [***.doc] rather than the newer Word [***.docx].

I converted Bob Scanlan's article to a ***.docx file and it seemed to download faster. Give it a try and see.

If that's the case, I'll convert the other slow downloaders later.  --jack

Jack,

I went on Bob Scanlan's story and I believe you got it right. It comes up much better.

I'm not worried about a few second's delay. What I was worried about is delays of 30-40 seconds or more, like McLellan's that took well over a minute. Please use the newer Word on the other 4 sites when you have time and that should be fine.

Thanks much,

Jim

Hi Jack,

When you have time could you add the picture Fran and Jean Pelletier sent me today? They have two already but they could be reduced, right? and then add this one of the two of them.

Secondly, I would appreciate it if you  could add contact info for

Zimmerman and Kaple. They are the only one's without that info.

Finally, I just received an email from MP Rev. Robert Haggett  (no relation to Louise) and he will be sending his story to me shortly which I will forward to you.

Look forward to receiving your story, etc. at the end of the month and our tutorial session so that I can take a load off of you. I will still look to you for advice and help if I get into a situation I can't handle.. if that is o.k. with you.

HI  Y'ALL !!   YOU PROBABLY SAW OR HEARD this news before:  but just in case you didn't:  the Lord called to Himself .. one of our finest married priests recently.  May he rest in peace; and his wife "Roddy" and his family experience comfort from their faith, and the support of us their friends or acquaintances.   Peace, Henry

___________________________________________________________

We honor the memory of a great priest and author, WILLIAM CLEARY.

William Cleary died Thursday, May 3, 2012, in Pillsbury Manor, South Burlington. He is survived by his wife, Mary Francis "Roddy" O'Neil Cleary; two sons, Tom and Neil; foster daughter, Ry Nguon; and siblings, Thomas H. Cleary, Catherine Scharle, Margaret Dittmann and Daniel Quiery. Bill was born Dec. 12, 1926, in Detroit, Mich.

He served in the Navy from 1944-1946, entered the Jesuit order in 1947 and studied at Saint Louis University. He spent 22 years as a Jesuit, teaching literature, music and drama. In 1964, while teaching at Sogang University in Seoul, Korea, he wrote "Chun Hyang Song", a musical comedy based on a Korean folk tale. It was revived for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and again in 2006 at Seoul's Co-Ex Theater.

In the late 60's in New York City, he founded the Jesuit Writers Agency and co-founded Billy Budd Films, writing and producing educational short films. In 1969, he left the Jesuits and married Roddy. They settled in Vermont in 1976, opening Hopkins Bookshop at 136 Church St. in Burlington.

A prolific songwriter, Bill composed seven musicals and many other original songs; he also authored twelve books along with countless articles and book reviews. He was a vibrant member of the Burlington community and one of the founding members of Green Mountain Habitat For Humanity.

He and Roddy opened their home to a number of refugees, students, relatives and people in need. Most of all, he was well-loved for his wit, warmth, compassion, deep spirituality and joyful irreverence.

A memorial in his honor will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Society. Funeral arrangements by Steven C. Gregory & Son. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity, 300 Cornerstone Drive, Suite 335, Williston VT 05495.

Hi Jack,

Sorry that I didn't get back to you sooner, but our daughter asked us for a special favor to watch their children tonight while they had to be gone and we just returned home a few minutes ago.  I didn't know Bill Cleary, but he sounds like a remarkable individual. He must have been with the Sunday Bunch after we left for Maine. By

coincidence, we knew a Dennis Cleary and his wife who were members in the late 70's and early 80's before we left the D.C. area.

I agree whole heartedly with your suggestion that Bill be given special mention as a priest of great integrity on our website. I would appreciate it if you would write that up. Now, your tribute to him got me thinking and what I would like to do is talk to

Judy about adding a special section for married priests of integrity who have “finished the course" and I would like to suggest that we might use the passage from St. Paul’s 2nd Letter to Timothy, ch. 4, verse 7 in which he utters such stirring  words as he faces his own imminent death:

"I HAVE COMPETED WELL; I HAVE FINISHED THE RACE; I HAVE KEPT THE FAITH!"

Bill could be our first entry and we would welcome receiving words of tribute for our brothers and their wives who have so nobly lived their lives for all who have sought

their help.

I will email Judy tomorrow and share this with her. I am sure that she will agree that it is a most fitting tribute.

Talk to you soon., and thank you for reminding us of the contributions our deceased brothers and their wives have made towards a revitalization of the Church.

Jim

Hi Jack,

I just want to let you know that I will be in Maine for a couple of weeks

to visit our son Jeff and family. Really looking forward to seeing our

three grandchildren up there....and get out of this heat.

I did suggest a couple of MPs contact you if they need getting on the married

priest website. I hope you don't mind. Also, I hope everyone that wants to has

seen the results.. We have 17 stories at this time  and 2 on the Memoriam list.

I am not sure when the revised Rentapriest website will be up. I'm waiting on

that to get listed so that it will be easier for everyone to have access.

Our best to you and your wife.

Enjoy your stay with family in Maine, Jackie and Jim. Now that the heavy heat wave has ended down your way, Maine should be a pleasant change.

I was happy to help our brothers who need help on the website. I assisted only Bob Haggett so far. If an others need help, I'm at their service.

A couple of suggestions:

1. You may be aware that the stories submitted in MS Word are able to be saved and edited by any one who opens them. I can't imagine why anyone would want to do that. Wanting to keep their submissions proprietary, some submitters may want their stories preserved intact and integrals as submitted To preserve originality and ownership, you might want to consider converting the final edits to .pdf files. This will preserve them from editing by anyone accessing them. I can do that if you wish using Adobe.

At a later time, submitters who may want to edit their stories would then need to resubmit the edited version. For those who have Adobe .pdf, submitting their stories in that format [technical background at  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Document_Format ] in the future will demand they have carefully edited the story since we will not be able to re-edit a story submitted as a .pdf file.

2. Since there is a segment of the website with a calendar, had you considered entering dates of conferences and seminars on the calendar page. I'm thinking that, in addition to any MCPI and CITI Ministries, Inc. activities, the calendar may serve the purpose of summarizing the dates of FCM, CORPUS [this year's conference was June 28-30], CTA, WOC, FutureChurch, ACC [American Catholic Council]. The listing might or might not include a link to the homepage of the organization. I've taken the liberty of including the listing of teh FCM Assembly, July 20-22, as an example for you to see. I can, of course, remove it if these kind of listings do not conform to your intentions for the MCPI site.

I have a listing of the upcoming reforming church events for the organizations listed above. Let me know if you want me to include them. One that comes to mind is:

CTA: Justice Rising  - November 9-11, Louisville, KY

Hi Jim,

Hope all's been well with you. Up here in CT, winter, we're hoping is on the wane.

I've been wondering since your February email to the citi- list, if you've had any response. I see there's been 1,192 views of your pages.

When I received your email on the citi- list, I was thinking that you might have gotten better response if you'd include the link to your "mywedding.com" site within your email notice, like this:

http://www.mywedding.com/vendors/reverend-james-lovejoy-88809/services?guideId=11&categoryId=49

That allows recipients to "copy and paste" the URL into their browser for easier access to the website. I had to do a bit of searching on the site to get to your My Wedding listing. But for those who don't know, placing "Reverend James Lovejoy" in their browser brings up a number of listing including those to our book. I should probably have done that browser search first.

If you haven't changed the password for the website and you still need any updating, please let me know. If what's needed is not too complex, I'd be glad to help.

Greeting to Jackie!  --jack
