Communication is essential in personalized learning. In personalized learning, there are many different forms of communication educators can utilize with their students, parents, and other stakeholders. From feedback, to collaborative conversations amongst students, to student advocating, and more - teachers must provide students with tools to successfully communicate themselves. According to Clark (2017),  "when teachers facilitate the building block of communication, not only are they nurturing a learning environment that supports personalized learning, they are also helping students to develop skills that are essential for personal and professional success". Although communication does start at home it is the teachers who provide the deepening tools students need to drive their communication skills further.

One of the most important steps in teaching students how to be good communicators is to also teach them about being good listeners as well.  Effective listeners help allow their speakers to feel confident and secure when sharing their opinions which is important, especially in a classroom with your peers (4 Types of Listening: Exploring How to Be a Better Listener | Maryville Online, 2021). Effective communication skills allow students to better advocate for themselves when they are in the classroom and working with adults in a school setting. In addition, it leads to better classroom collaboration and a positive learning environment as well.

Not only is it important for teachers to communicate with their students, for teachers to teach their students effective communication skills, but it is also important that both teachers and students communicate with all stakeholders. It is important as educators that we not only teach effective communication but also model it as much as possible.
