Percent Academic Learning Time (ALT) on Student-Centered Pedagogies: What proportion of instructional time do you estimate most students will spend on automated pedagogy in your classroom? Is this different for each subject area?
In my physical science class, we use automated pedagogy about 15-20% of the time. The number has increased since Gwinnett County Public Schools issued laptops to each student and we're now one-to-one with devices. In addition, we have set a "digital learning day" where instruction is delivered via teacher-recorded lessons, Youtube videos, and more.
Types of Automated Pedagogies: What automated pedagogies will you be using, if any? Is this different for different groups or subject areas? Explain.
In my physical science class, I have a modified blended learning environment. I use a blend of D2L (eClass) and Google Classroom to communicate my curriculum. With the help of web tools, google extensions, and add ons I provide students with engaging activities when not directly instructing them in the classroom. I have created videos on Loom and used videos on Youtube and created a playlist. In addition, I have created unit-specific Symbaloo to provide students with additional resources that they can use throughout the unit. Using tools like Google Suites allows students to work on projects at their own pace and be able to see their progress and provide them with feedback.

Project-based learning supports personalized learning by focusing on authentic and adaptive assessment. executive function, expanded collaboration, asset-based dispositions, learner agency, flexible education resources, and more. "Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects" (What Is PBL?, n.d.). Students choose how they approach the issue in a group or individual-based setting. Throughout the project students and teachers can co-plan to ensure the progress of the students is on track. PBL lends itself perfectly to science and gives students voice and choice opportunities as well as many more opportunities to utilize their personalized learning skills and strategies.
Collaborative learning is the approach in education where students work collectively together to accomplish tasks; this could be a structured discussion, a hands-on lab, a project, or more (Cooperative and Collaborative Learning: Explanation, n.d.). There are many platforms in which students can collaborate; in person using paper and pencil, Google Workspace products, Canva, D2L, and more. Students will have a voice and choice when producing a product as far as what platform to use, what they want it to look like, and more. Some benefit of students using platforms that have a cloud base system is being able to work on it from anywhere, at any time. Often times if a student takes home a project they can run into the issue of a student forgetting to bring it back or not completing it on time. Students participate in think-pair-share daily in my classroom and given science conversation starters.
"Learner Agency is about shifting the ownership of learning from teachers to students, enabling students to have the understanding, ability, and opportunity to be part of the learning design and to take action to intervene in the learning process, affect outcomes, and become powerful lifelong learners." (Clague, n.d.). There are some things are set in place that as a teacher I must follow, which prevents my ability to give students total freedom in the classroom. However, with the control I do have in the classroom, I can still provide students with the opportunity to take ownership of their learning to a degree. The lessons, projects, and more that happens in my classroom are based on my interaction with my students and the misconceptions that arise or extensions I see are needed. Students will then be given the opportunity to exercise their voice and choice based on the lessons, projects, and more in order to demonstrate their mastery in a way that best suites them.
