IÂ Kings
The Book of 1 Kings primarily tells the story of the kingdom of Israel after King David's death. It covers the rise and fall of several kings and the nation's spiritual condition.Â
The book of 1 Kings provides an account of the death of David, the reign of his son Solomon, and the decline and division of the Kingdom of Israel after Solomon and many of his successors turned to idol worship. It also recounts the ministry of the prophet Elijah among the northern ten tribes of Israel.Â
Solomon becomes king after David’s death.
He asks God for wisdom and becomes known for his wise judgments (like the famous case of the two mothers and the baby).
Solomon builds the temple in Jerusalem, fulfilling his father David’s dream.
He also builds a grand palace and expands the kingdom’s wealth and influence.
However, Solomon’s many foreign wives lead him into idolatry, and he begins to turn away from God. After Solomon’s death, his son Rehoboam became king.
Due to harsh policies, the kingdom splits:
Northern Kingdom (Israel) under Jeroboam.
Southern Kingdom (Judah) under Rehoboam.
The northern kings lead Israel into idolatry, setting up golden calves and worshipping other gods.
The prophet Elijah appears as a key figure, challenging Israel’s kings and false prophets.
He famously confronts King Ahab and Queen Jezebel and challenges the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.
Elijah performs miracles and calls the people back to God.
