I joined the movement of the ACLU back in February of 2021! So far, I have attended a couple different meetings where we promote the rights of Black rights, Women's rights, Immigrant rights and the rights of ALL people in Minnesota. This non-profit organization believes in the people; although we are all entitled to our own opinions, feelings, and beliefs, the ACLU provides insight for just about everything that needs an readjustment. For example, capital punishment, disability rights, criminal law reform, immigrants rights, and reproductive freedom over one's body. The goal is to come together collaboratively and brainstorm different ideas on how we can push for these rights to get the idea out there to naysayers and get others to simply believe in the importance of these rights.
George Floyd died at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department in May of 2020. Derek Chauvin was later found guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter April 20th, 2021. The city of Minneapolis was in uproar; many riots and protest took place as a result of consistent police brutality, lack of police accountability, and racism.
Over time, there have been various occurrences where Immigrants from many countries were forced to protest so they could have a place in the American society. Reality is, we all belong despite where we come from.
