The CRI involves students reading a passage or story, followed by questions to assess their ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret the narrative. It is used to gauge a student’s ability to understand the structure of a narrative, their ability to make inferences, and how well they can summarize key events or themes. This is on top of providing an oral reading accuracy and silent reading comprehension score.
Used: Narrative Reading CRI: Form B Level 1: Birthday at the Zoo AND Form B Level P: The T-Ball Game
Oral Reading Accuracy: Level 1 (Too hard); Level P (Adequate)
Silent Reading Comprehension- Level 1 (Adequate); Level P (does not assess this skill)
Emery showed growth in her reading and comprehension skills compared to the earlier assessment. While the Level 1 text proved too challenging for independent reading (indicated by the 19 oral reading errors), Emery was able to answer 6 out of 8 comprehension questions correctly with prompting, showing understanding of the story despite decoding difficulties. At the Level P text, she demonstrated strong oral reading accuracy, making only 2 errors, suggesting that Level P remains an appropriate reading level for her. Continued practice with higher-level texts will support Emery’s transition to more complex reading material.
