As a third-year medical student, I have been able to explore the various fields of medicine and help care for patients in a variety of settings. Our third year is centered around clinical experiences and discovering what field of medicine we want to practice in. In the start of the year, there was a lot of talk about Coronavirus and if/when we would start seeing cases. We did not know the impact it would have on us as students but also as a community.
The number of cases of COVID-19 began to climb and in the middle of March the decision was made for us to shift to didactic rotations and continue our clinical education outside of the hospitals and clinical settings. This was foreign to all of us. We continued our education, but something was missing. No longer was I able to be a part of the team caring for a patient. I knew the decision was necessary to help reduce the risk of exposure and potential asymptomatic carriers. I knew the PPE and other equipment was becoming more and more limited with orders unable to be filled. My days in the hospital quickly transitioned to days at my apartment with zoom conference calls to those on my surgery clerkship. Days passed but something was missing. I wanted to help.
Little by little I learned how to sew masks and scrub caps. We got together while abiding by social distancing guidelines and sewed masks for our Macon community. We started hearing of needs in our community we knew we could help meet. With that, #MaconStrong was founded. As the founder, I’ve worked together with my peers to establish a team that is centered around our community. I find myself plugged in with all of our volunteer efforts and look forward to working with our community!
Our goal is simple. We are here to help.
Our day to day lives are not the same as what they were a month ago. We are now physically distanced in our homes. We invite you to join us. We are #MaconStrong
