2025 BROADCASTER OF THE YEAR!
Diversity is possibly one of the most important parts of journalism. It is never guaranteed everyone has the same view on a story or event, and having diversity throughout our staff and audience allows us to make sure everyone is heard and feels represented.
Over the course of the first few weeks of the new school year, I was instrumental in leading the policies and procedures the staff follow to ensure clear, concise and diverse coverage. The outcome of our work is below:

Reflect on why diversity is important.

Set specific goals (e.g., reflect the school's racial, cultural, gender, and ability diversity).
Recruit Broadly and Intentionally
Don’t just ask friends—promote open calls in various student spaces (e.g., clubs, sports, affinity groups).
Visit different classrooms or talk to student leaders to invite participation from underrepresented groups.
Make Joining Accessible
Ensure no one feels like they have to already “know everything.”
Offer mentoring or beginner-friendly roles (camera assistant, scriptwriter, social media, etc.).
Create an Inclusive Environment
Promote a safe space where all voices are heard and respected.
Avoid cliques and encourage collaboration.
Use inclusive language and address bias if it shows up.
Celebrate All Cultures and Backgrounds
Recognize and uplift different identities in behind-the-scenes roles and on-air.

Include student spotlights from a variety of clubs, cultural groups, and backgrounds.
Cover events or celebrations like Black History Month, Diwali, Eid, Lunar New Year, Hispanic Heritage Month, LGBTQ+ Pride, etc.
Avoid Stereotyping
Don’t just show one perspective or rely on clichés.
Let people tell their own stories—use interviews and authentic voices.
Use a Variety of Voices
Rotate hosts, anchors, and segment producers to reflect different experiences.
Encourage student input from all grade levels and communities.
Get Feedback and Improve
Ask students and teachers what they think of your show.
