Lyall Bay School

Last week a group of Onepū tamariki put a submission to the Council to keep the calm street / safe street initiative which has been in place.  The group started work on the submission last term.  It started with all tamariki interested in the trial meeting together.  They then voted to show if they were interested in the road staying as it is now, or returning to as it had been.  The overwhelming majority voted to keep it, so that is what our submission was focused on.  Tamariki had the opportunity to be a story collector, ambassador, artist, media, writer, photographer, researcher, or speaker.  Some tamariki opted to be part of many roles and some just one.  As a team, they gathered different information and shared it. Ambassadors spoke to younger classes, along with story collectors, researchers found out more about the trial and what it was like before, artists designed posters, media took photos, writers wrote speeches, etc.   It was arranged for tamariki to spend some time with the mayor and to visit the traffic control room too.

              Safer Streets Submission

Lyall Bay School proved that even the smallest voices can be heard, persuading the City Council to keep their safety crossing.

On Wednesday 5th August, Years 5 and 6 from Lyall Bay School visited the Wellington City Council chambers to make a submission on the road safety initiative on Freyberg Street outside the school.

Lyall Bay School Year 6 student, Bailey Salt, was one of the speakers.

“I felt a bit nervous at the start, but when I saw all the council members and how they were smiling and impressed, I felt a lot better,” shared Bailey.

“I liked it because we really got to express our opinions.”

Lyall Bay School argued that “The Blue Crossing” just couldn’t go. The students showed that they really cared, and the council members saw that.

The students argued that children were being more independent and getting to school in a safer environment with help from the crossing.

Shortly after the students’ submission, the council voted to make the decision to keep the crossing permanent.

This week is maths week. On Friday, during the Teacher Only Day, we worked with the refreshed maths curriculum. We were able to build our knowledge and understanding of the curriculum and explore different ideas and concepts. Here are some photos of what has started this week with maths. 

Our Strategic Plan is almost ready to be sent out to you all. Our three Pou are Pou Manaaki - Relationship and Identity; Pou Pākiki - Creativity and Curiosity; Pou Hiranga - Excellence and Wellbeing. Strategic Priorities for each of these have been identified, using all the feedback we have received from whānau, tamariki, kaimahi and kaiako.

Fundraising: A Wordathon is our biggest fundraiser this year. Tamariki will have brought home a pamphlet that looks like this to gather sponsorship. On 26th August tamariki will write, write, write, and get sponsored for every word. This sponsorship will go toward getting a new turf as the surrent one is past its used by date! 

Please support our kura to have a new turf, where we can play on a smooth, clean, and dry surface.
