TASK:
You are to pick 3 objects for EACH shape, Circle, Triangle and Square.
This can be a level, a character or an object where you are able to identify shapes within them.
You are to research and analyse the shapes within them and give your own conclusion to how these are represented.
The Prowler from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse uses a lot of triangular shapes in the character and sharp edges. This is usually done for villain's in movies as they are unpredictable and the danger that you either face in a game or what the main character faces. As well as the shapes used in the character, dark colours are also used in the danger with them often being red or darker colours. This type of showing danger in a character is very effective as it is not very often that you come across a friendly character that has lots of sharp edges on their outfit or dark colours.
Unlike the Prowler, Miles Morales doesn't have any sharp edges to his character and his character utilises a more circular build to show that he is the friendly character as when most people think of soft edges they don't think of danger and they feel a lot safer, this character also uses brighter colours on his outfit which shows he isn't afraid to hide from people unlike the villain's who try and hide to not get caught by bystanders where as the more friendly characters aren't afraid to interact with the people that are around them. This type of shape use in the character is effective as there isn't many unfriendly characters that wear bright outfits.
This level uses squares in the level to show that it is safe to go across them and gives the player a sense of direction of where to go and gives them a sense of security as if they just stay on the right path in following the squares then they will stay safe that they are secure. This type of using shapes in a level is effective as people will be able to recognise the different types of shapes that are included in the game and then figure out how to complete the level once they find out what each shape is.
Kingpin from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse utilises a square shape to show that he is hard to move is very strong. This gives off a unfriendly manner even if you don't know anything about him and just saw him as he is obviously trying to protect himself from something, his character utilises the fact that he is hard to move and defeat perfectly as if you encounter him and come close you feel as though you have now entered an enclosed space with nowhere to escape to, this is effective as giving off his unfriendly vibe that he carries around with him wherever he goes.
The Joker from the game Batman: Arkham Knight utilises triangular and cut off edges and shapes to effectively show that he is an unfriendly character with details on all of his character as a whole and even up to all of the details on his face using triangular structures to show that he is not safe to have an encounter with. The sharp edges on his character make him seem like even though you already know that he is a dangerous character you actually underestimate him.
Despite being a hero and not a villian Batman utilises triangular shapes in his character to show that he is dangerous but in a good way as he is fighting against the villain's. This type of utilising triangles in a character is different to what people are usually expecting as they expect the villain's to be the ones with the sharper edges so once the hero utilises this it makes people queston whether he is just trying to mock the villian's or if eh has a hidden secret.
Mario utilises rounder shapes in his character to show that he is friendly and safe to interact with as rounder edges make the character feel like they are there to protect you from any danger that is on its way. This use of shapes in his character is effective as when you see Mario you think of safety and don't think about any danger due to his appearance giving an open space feel and that you are not trapped if you encounter him somewhere.
The civil protection unit character from Half-Life 2 utilises sharper triangular edges to show that it is not a friendly character that can help you and instead makes them appear as a menacing character to you throughout the game that you have to defeat in order to get past certain levels. This character shows an effective use of the triangular edges to give of an evil vibe and makes you feel as though they are enclosing the space around you.
Kirby's character is made entirely from circular objects to show that it is not dangerous if you are on the same side as it. The use of shapes in the character has been utilised properly as you can clearly see that the character is not a menacing character like characters that utilise triangles.
Steve from Minecraft is made entirely from squares to show that he is strong, this is utilised in the game by the fact that when playing as Steve in Minecraft you can carry a large amount of things on your body at once without it wearing him down any more than if he had nothing in his inventory.
Colour swatch for a scene from Dead By Daylight. The colours used in this scene uses washed out colours which is a common theme in horror games as it shows that the area is derelict and is not looked after, this makes anything that happen in this area seem unexpected as you don't know what to expect from an empty and abandoned area.
Colour theory is the theory that the colours used in a scene or on an object/ character can give you a different inference just by having a different colour set, this can be as simple as having colder colours such as greens and blues to show that an area is mysterious and unsafe, or warmer colours that show that an area may be dangerous or possibly safe.
Primary colours are the 3 base colours Red, Yellow, Blue that are used in order to make secondary colours by mixing them together such as how mixing yellow and blue will give you green which is a secondary colour.
Secondary colours are the colours that are made form mixing 2 primary colours together, the three secondary colours are Green, Purple, Orange.
In between both primary and secondary colours is a gradient of colours that are known as tertiary colours and these are simply just the colours that don't fall under one specific primary or secondary colour and instead are on the gradient of being under both of them such as some shades of orange looking yellow.
Colours can also represent emotions due to them being associated with things for a long time, this includes Red being signified with anger, Blue with sadness, Green with envy, Purple with wealth due to purple coloured things in the past being very scarce due to the complexity of making it, Orange representing warmth/ security and finally the colour yellow representing joy.
A lot of games such as FPS games will have a highlight on the enemies such as in the example on the left of Valorant which also allows you the ability to change the highlight colour if you are colour blind. This type of colour theory has a lot of purpose as if all of the characters looked the exact same it would be confusing on who to shoot
As you can see on the bottom of the picture where the colour swatch is the highlight colours are bright so that they stand out.
In games such as Counter Strike 2 your screen will have some blood red splatters on the screen to show that you have taken damage which can be useful as you will see the blood splatters before seeing the enemy which may give you a split second to hide from the enemy instead of just going straight towards them not realising that you have taken damage.
During this lesson I have learned about the importance of colour and what a dramatic change it can make to things such as just a simple room to the characters as if a villian has bright colours it wont seem right as villains tend to have dark clothing and a dark appearance, I will keep this in mind for my next lessons and make sure that I don't colour something poorly and instead think about what colours I should use before making a choice. The impact of this lesson showed me that all choices when creating something have to be taken into account as having a menacing appearance of a character or a area that is supposed to have a tense atmosphere as having bright colours could throw off the whole character or scene.
