Throughout this album YBN Cordae shows his appeal to older audiences and younger audiences while taking advantage of all kinds of production. With songs like “Way Back Home” accompanied by songs like ‘Broke As Fuck” Cordae displays and discovers his many styles and sounds throughout this album. This album is a good debut album but I simply cannot see a central idea or motivation behind it. This album has many song to song messages but no collective theme to move this album to the next level. One of my favorite tracks from this album is definitely Thousand Words because he pairs a boom bap type beat with a meaningful message and a more current wave delivery. This album only helps Cordae as this shows he can put together a studio album that means something, his past release with the YBN collective shows a promising future and this album capitalizes on that skill. This album has powerful, moving lyrics splintered throughout it, for example “ no amount of likes can heal up all this pain that I'm feeling, Maybe conceal it, and hide in all these problems we deal with, I grew up on the principle, to raise a child, need a village, I think we all want to be a little Instagram famous, Deep down inside, nobody really wanna be nameless”. It however lacks in spots, for example “Aimin' for the top, I'm on target like a Brady pass, Did a show for eighty cash, and threw it in my lady bag, That was fuckin' easy money, sniper, on my KD swag”. Throughout this album Cordae has a weak bar or song for every strong one, and for him to get to that next level he needs to produce more meaningful bars. This album has 6 features, Anderson .Paak, Arin Ray, Chance the Rapper, Meek Mill, Pusha T, & Ty Dolla $ign. Each feature delivers on their respective feature verse or chorus, however some outshine others as they bring more important and album advancing parts than others. The production on this album is mostly outstanding, but some songs feel to polished or under polished. In certain songs the underdeveloped instrumentals create a powerful focus on the lyrics will others show an under polished songs weakness. Cordae’s flows and deliveries fit almost every single track and I have no critiques. However if Cordae wants to get to that next level he has to change up his style from song to song. The ideas on this album have been talked about before but with Cordae’s personal experiences and comments on each subject he puts a spin on them like he was meant to address these things. YBN Cordae is versatile on this project but I believe for him to grow more he needs to incorporate a wider variety of deliveries. I liked this album and hope in his next project he can expand further on certain topics, this album however was an impressive debut for him. Overall, this project was a pretty good debut album, there are ways he could improve but he shows his true skill and ability on this album.
