After Jesus was born, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’
When King Herod heard this he was disturbed.
Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. Micah the prophet had referred to Bethlehem 700 years earlier, so Herod sent them to Bethlehem and said, ‘Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.’
After this, the Magi went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them ...

Today many are cynical about the structures of power - be it locally, nationally or international. There is a suspicion of governments, and organisations such as the United Nations have been ineffective in countering regime instigated atrocities.
2,000 years ago learned men were looking for the seat of a different kind of power, and set off on a long quest to find it. They looked in places that seemed obvious at the time (e.g. Jerusalem), but were then directed to the seemingly insignificant.
The object of their search was not the rise of yet another human empire, but instead the little boy - Jesus.
Maybe you are cynical yourself - quite likely with good reasons! This Christmas consider where you should be looking - to empire/power mentality, or to God working in the seemingly small and vulnerable?
Dear God - please help me to search honestly for you
