God sent an angel to a town called Nazereth in Galilee to speak to a young woman called Mary. She was promised to be married to a man called Joseph. The angel said: "Greetings - you are very special!". Mary was surprised, but the angel continued: "Do not be afraid - God is with you. You will have a baby, and give birth to a son. You are to give him the name 'Jesus'. He will be great, and God will give him reign over the whole people that you belong to - a reign that will never end".
Mary could not make sense of this - she hadn't even got married yet! The angel said: "The Holy Spirit with the power of God will be at work in your life. The baby will be very special and called 'the Son of God'".
Mary accepted this and replied to the angel: "May your word be fulfilled"!
Luke chapter 1 verses 26 to 34
These days it is hard to know what to believe. Fake news, pictures and videos go viral leaving us all confused and maybe even scared.
Consider how Mary felt when this angel told her to expect not just a baby, but a special baby who would change the world!
Each day we have to learn to filter and discard that which is fake ... but also to cling on to that which we believe to be true. Mary held tightly to the message from the angel, and waited for its fulfilment.
Today in the chaos and confusion of a dangerous world, remember that the name Jesus literally means 'God saves'. It is why Christians retain hope that no matter how dark things get, God can turn things around.
Dear God - please help each of us to know what is fake, and to cling to what is good.
