Shepherds were out in the fields near Bethlehem. They were watching their flocks through the night. An angel of God appeared, with the glory of God shining around them - making them very scared!
The angel said: "Do not be afraid. I bring good news that will lead to joy for all the people. Today in Bethlehem a saviour has been born. He is the special person sent by God".
The angel went on: "This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger".
The message had the backing of a choir of angels singing: "Glory to God - and on earth peace to people".
The shepherds acted on the angel's message, saying to each other: "Let's go to Bethlehem to see this!".
Luke chapter 2 verses 8 to 15
In today's world it appears that the classic 'playground bullies' are allowed to operate at the level of international politics - throwing their weight at the expense of other nations and millions of ordinary people. Systems of world order have proved to be no barrier to such behaviour.
Yet the Christmas story conveys the opposite! The seemingly insignificant, the underdogs, are the very ones sent to be the first to see the antidote to the selfish and self-important. This remedy is to be found in the form of a baby hastily clothed in whatever was to hand that fateful night.
This is the power of God to save ... operating completely different to any form of human power!
In Lubbesthorpe can we embody the principles that each person matters regardless of apparent status, wealth or power? Maybe each of us, no matter how insignificant we may feel about ourselves, can help spread the antidote to the worst that humans can do to each other.
Dear God - please help me to truly see what you bring, which can change the world
