This year we watched in horror as the people of Gaza were ordered to move again and again ... only to discover there is no 'safe place'. In the West Bank areas (which includes Bethlehem), long-time residents are forced to ask 'is there no place left' for them to remain?
Safety in Ukraine also remains but a dream as nightly drones reign down terror.
In these as well as other places, all the ordinary person wants is a place to lay their head - something that Joseph & Mary found elusive as they searched for a place to stay in Bethlehem.
We are grateful for the houses where we can live, and the growth of Lubbesthorpe as it now includes a shop, a health centre, and other facilities. It gives us a place we can call home, and a place where we can make friends and work together to build healthy community.
Yet the story of the birth of Jesus does not have these securities - each step seems precarious and insecure.
