Session 14: Eagles and Brigands
It was then – that the alarm in the tower rang.
Chaos erupted as a dark shadow of a giant eagle appeared near the top of the tall tower, where the alarm had been rung, and from there, massive talons pulled the brigand from the tower and flew into the air. Screams tear through the night and come to an end with a sickening thud. A second eagle captures the second in the tall tower, as he scrambles down the ladder to escape, his fate is the same as his companion, coming to a sudden end as gravity takes its toll. A third great eagle sweeps through the ruins, but the ruffians are able to avoid being picked up.
The brigands and ruffians inside the ruins begin to fire at the Great Eagles, as the giant birds circle above them.
Lodin, while blowing his horn, dashes across the walkway, running to the northwestern tower, and taking cover, before peeking over and firing at one of the robbers in the ruins. The robber, struck with an arrow, was surprised, but still alive - where had the arrow come from?
Despite the chaos, one of the other robbers drew his bow and fired at one of the giant eagles as it swooped by, striking Armanel in the wing. The giant eagle cried out in pain. Fumbling for his arrows, however, his second arrow flew wide, missing Armanel with his following shot.
Maethordan shouted, “Keep them distracted, I am going around the fort to free her." With that Maethordan headed carefully down the stairs and out of the hole in the western wall. Having spotted the large hole in the eastern wall, he moved anticlockwise around the fort as fast as he could, keeping as close as he could to the walls.
One of the other robbers, in the ruins, fired two shots - one had caught Baranthor by surprise, causing the giant eagle to give pause, which allowed the robbers second arrow to strike Baranthor with a very well placed shot.
The robber, whom Lodin had struck, fired two lucky shots, and despite the partial cover behind the wall, he fired two shots and both found their mark, striking Lodin in the shoulder, getting partially through the chinks of the mail-shirt and though not going deep are now stuck scratching him as he moved.
Another robber, trying to determine where to fire, fired a shot at one of the giant eagles, Beleram, and managed to have both arrows strike the giant eagle.
As the Southern Raider, running for the stairs, after seeing Lodin in the small tower, rounded the corner, Frerin gave a mighty swing of his axe, but holding a larger shield than his dwarven hands were used to, threw him off balance - and despite the Southern Raider not expecting more company was surprised to see the dwarf, he drew his blade and prepared to fight him.
Fay fires her bow, striking one of the robbers in the ruins.
Then came the fury of the Giant Eagles. Beleram swopped down, his talons raking across one of the robbers, each claw digging deep into their flesh as he screamed and collapsed as Beleram released him, a pool of blood around him, but still alive.
Baranthor, slightly wounded, swooped down on another of the robbers, leaving him bloody as one of his talons dug deep into the robber’s shoulders, body and back. He collapsed, bleeding badly, but also still alive.
Armanel, least damaged of the Great Eagles, but seeing his two comrades having been wounded, swooped down one of the robbers and viciously tore the robber apart, before taking him to the air and dropping his corpse back into the ruins.
The Giant Eagles returned to the air, circling the ruins, waiting to see if they should come down again.
At that moment the northern gate thundered and began to crack. Peering through the splintering wood that would soon crumble under another such assault was Dolly.
And she looked pissed.
