Frerin Stonecliff, son of Vidar, serves as a Captain to the Dwarves of Blue Mountain. His family traces far into the histories of mining in Blue Mountain. When recent bandit activity increased, Frerin who had often battled goblins who were either inside the mines, or outside of the mines, ambushing dwarves, quickly rose through the ranks of being far more than a miner like his family history suggested - he was a true warrior. He became a trusted companion to those who were traveling in and out of the mines, and eventually rose to the status of a Captain of his own guard.

When several dwarves returned from the Great East Road, speaking of bandit activity and wargs, Frerin took it upon himself to go research what had been going on. He traced the brigands to Gwathpind ("Shadow Ridge") where he would meet several others, also investigating the brigand activity. Joined together, they attacked the ruffians within the ruins, aided by, unexpectantly, by three Great Eagles sent by none other than Strider or Gandalf to aid them - and urge them to return to Weathertop.

Knowing the history and popularity of Gandalf, Frerin joined the others and returned to Weathertop where, through one of their captives, a human ruffian named Welton Wayland, that orcs had come and enslaved them - and that they were in service of a Cargûl - A powerful wraith that has arisen and works with a mysterious agenda. It'd taken over command of orcs, and then used the orcs to seize a ruffian operation. One of the plans revealed was that it had hoped to poison the water supply to Bree.

Frerin offered to remain with them, and travels with them now.

During Yule, he received a summons from Balin, Son of Fundin, Envoy of Dáin Ironfoot, the King Under the Mountain to be called back to Blue Mountain because the goblins have grown more bold in their attacks.

GM Note: Frerin was introduced as an NPC to travel with the party, because one of the players had left the game, and the two remaining players had wanted to continue. Because they were going to be going up against a fort of brigands I introduced Frerin as an NPC to help with the battle. I had Frerin depart in Session 22 because a new player reached out to me and asked if they could join and they rolled up a Hobbit Captain, so I had Frerin depart (story wise) to avoid redundancy. And this is probably not the last time they will see or hear from this Dwarf Captain should the game continue long enough...
