VSA Modern is a dance team based at CSULB, comprised of dancers who share a love for all styles of dance and performance. We are a family that values and encourages dedication, teamwork, and growth. With all the late nights dancing outside at the Pyramid or in various parts on campus, while balancing jobs, extracurriculars, and rigorous academics, our dancers achieve the discipline and work ethic that will make them influential leaders in the community. The skills we learn and the strong friendships we make contribute to how VSA Modern has become a supportive network that goes beyond just the dancing. With this foundation in our professionalism and love for each other, we hope to inspire and be inspired as we continue to strengthen our presence in the dance community.
During Fall semesters, we hold dance workshops on campus usually on weekend days, for $2 a person, once or twice a week, to learn a piece from a choreographer/dancer from the VSA/Vietnamese-American community. Sometimes, we host free workshops in order to promote VSA Modern, so be sure to watch out for those!
In Winter 2016-17, we focused for the first time on participating in the 1st Annual Tet Dance Competition (TDC) at the 36th Annual UVSA Tet Festival. The video below showcases our 1st place performance.
Then in Spring, VSA Modern focuses their time and energy on learning pieces for our annual Vietnamese Culture Night (VCN). We spend weekends and long hours practicing and perfecting our pieces, and the best part of it is how memorable our bonding experience is during the practices, and we grow together as a family while learning modern pieces together. It really is an experience to have during college, most of us believe.
